It
would be remiss indeed not to record that cricket was played in
Whitwell long before the formation of the Colliery Cricket Club
and no doubt those team members of Whitwell West End and St
Lawrence Church team were formed the nucleus of the Colliery
teams.
A general
meeting was held at the Butchers Arms on Monday 21st January 1895
to consider the means of forming a Cricket Club at Whitwell
Colliery.
Following
the inaugural meeting, subsequent meetings were held from which it
was decided to advertise in the Daily Telegraph for matches, to
ask the Colliery Matches to provide a roller and for Sam Malthouse
to enquire into the purchase of equipment, no doubt through his
connections with the County (Derbyshire where he played between
1890-95).
The history
of Whitwell Cricket Club can be traced through the minute books
which have been preserved since 1895 with the exceptions of the
1912 - 1924 which are missing. These not only show the clubs
activities but are also a reflection of the important part played
by the club and cricket and cricket field in particular in the
social activities of the village.
In 1904
Whitwell Colliery Cricket Club became a founder member of the
Bassetlaw League along with Clowne, Creswell, Gainsborough
Britannia, Kiveton Park, Retford, Shireoaks and Worksop. The first
match in the competition and the only fixture that day was on the
30th April 1904, between Whitwell and Retford, played on
Whitwell's new ground off Station Road, which is still their home
ground to this day.
Many things
have happened to Whitwell Cricket Club over the years, in 1984 the
Colliery closed, so the club became Whitwell Cricket Club. But the
most important event in recent years was the building of the new
pavilion in the year 2000. The planning has been going on for
nearly seven years, but with the help of a Lottery Grant Whitwell
Cricket Club has one of the finest pavilions in the league.
