Following the reclamation and development of a small wooden copse directly adjacent to the cricket ground in Whitwell, (which has been inhabited for many years by a colony of rooks as a nesting sanctuary). the site has been officially named the 'The Rookery', by the local Parish Council.
Whitwell Cricket Club has utilised this opportunity, and has adopted the 'Rookery' theme to link the club address and its Youth Teams to the development. The address of the club is now officially:
Whitwell Cricket Club,
The Village Cricket Ground,
The Rookery, Station Road,
Whitwell,
Worksop,
Notts, S80 4TT
All of the clubs Youth Team players are now known as 'The Rookies', which is similar to how many professional clubs have adopted names for their 'one day' games. (e.g. Yorkshire Phoenix or Sussex Sharks).
This clearly links into the word 'rookies' also relating to being new young cricketers, and a Youth Team cap has been formulated with a Rook in the middle of the cap, and the words, 'Whitwell CC - Rookies' being wrapped around the bird as the cap badge.
All Youth Team players will be provided with the Rookies cap, and will the have attain certain standards of achievement within the club, to earn the full club cap, which displays the official club logo of 'The Old Village Pump'. The pump is actually still sited in the centre of the village in the square, and is very much the symbol of the village from the name Whit 'well' was derived.
Both club caps signifying The Rookies (youth teams) and The Old Village Pump (Senior full club cap) are Navy Blue with Gold motifs.
The Club still has many opportunities for youth players, particularly at Under 11 'Kwick' cricket, and would welcome parents to bring their boys and girls along.
For 2003, the club has a definite 17 team, which will be competing in the Worksop & District Youth League.
The Club is also keen to kick start its Kwick Cricket Section for both Boys and Girls between the ages of 8 years and 11 years. Any parent who would wish to bring their children along, or even help out or join the club should contact either:
