2001-2002 Season Preview

Losses to:
Overage: Shaun Sutter, Matt Kinch, Sean McAslan.
Expansion Draft: David Leneveu.

Goal: Brett Krahn '82, Brady Block '81 (?), Ryan Martin '84
There's no question that Krahn will play upwards of 55 games for the Hitmen this year and a young list player will be groomed for the starter's job for the 2002/2003 season. With a defence that is going to lose stalwart Matt Kinch and the young guys seeing more ice, Krahn is likely going to be a busy guy this year. The Hitmen should be solid if Krahn stays healthy, but it could get "iffy" should a rookie have to shoulder the load.
Defence: Toni Bader '81 (?), Rod Sarich '81 (?), Wade Davis '82, Jared Carli '82, David Boychuk '84, Mike Egener '84, Dan Ehrman '84.
Young, but big and tough is the outlook for the Hitmen this year. Sophomores Boychuk, Egener and Ehrman will get plenty of ice time this year as they are the Hitmen's future. All of them have size and are physical. Bader was consistent, however the other veterans tend to be hit and miss as Sarich, Davis and Carli can be solid one night and struggle the next. If the kids improve in their second season, the Hitmen will be all right; if not, Krahn will see a lot of rubber. The Hitmen might entertain offers for either Bader or Sarich if all is not well in the first half of the season.
Forwards: Kris Beach '81 (?), Pavel Brendl '81 (?), Robin Gomez '81 (?), Jordan Krestanovich '81 (?), Michael Bubnick '82, Shaun Norrie '82, Owen Fussey '83, Brandon Segal '83, Chad Wolkowski '83 Adam Brettkreuz '84.
Beach, Brendl and Krestanovich are all as good as gone, leaving the Hitmen with a popgun offence at best unless their two European picks turn out to be Brendl #2 and #3. Fussey is a solid playmaking centre, but with no proven scorers in the current line-up to put on his wings, scoring will prove to be a problem. If Wolkowski stays healthy it will help, but Norrie, Bubnick and Segal will also need to score for the Hitmen to be succesful...as of yet they haven't shown enough consistency to bank on it happening. The Hitmen are rebuilding!
Europeans: The Hitmen need to hit two home runs in the European draft with a couple of forwards who can score on a consistent basis and help the team's offensive outlook for the coming season..
Overagers: Looks like Bader, Sarich and Gomez will be the 20's in Cowtown this year. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if none of them finish the year in Calgary, especially Sarich and Bader as teams that think they can take a run may look to these guys to shore up their defence.
