The
Book of Voodoo. By Leah Gordon
Review by Gede
Rated 4/5

You might pass the cheap purple book when your searching the New Age/Occult Section in the Bookstore. It's subtitle, Charms and Ritual to empower your life is probably the appealing bit, come on you can not deny you have ever felt a spark of interest thinking about sticking pins in dolls, but you won't find anything to break anybody's legs. It is a good introduction to the African-fetish religion with a dash of Catholicism. The Charms and and Rituals are the least part of the book, there is information about each Voodou deity or lwa and a list of sacred days. It gives a history of Haiti and Voodou and its origins. It talks about the priests and initiates and the common revelry and dancing of most Voodou worshippers. Beautiful and alternative Voodou art is pictured in the pages too. I would say the most interesting part for me was flicking through the Voodou Lwas (Deities) and literally screaming my ass off when I found my name surrounded by images of skulls and the Dead, when I calmed down I read the information and realised my name was the name for a family of Lwa who had connections with the Dead, Sex and Fertility. So now when someone asks me about my name I tell them I am named after the Voodou God of Death, it usually gets them away! So definitely give the book a read and you won't be bored!
