When Thomas Faulconer and His Descendants was published, it was believed that Nicholas Faulconer II of Essex County was married to Martha Greenhill. This notion was also accepted by the D.A.R. However, subsequent research shows that there were two Nicholas Faulconers, first cousins. There was a Nicholas II, son of Nicholas I of Essex County, who died in 1789. Also there was a Nicholas who married Martha Greenhill and who moved to Cumberland County. Here is an abstract of the evidence:Martha Faulconer, wife of Nicholas Faulkner of Cumberland County, relinquishes her right of Dower to land sold by her husband to John Oneal of King & Queen County, St. Stephens parish. Land formerly owned by Mary Byram of Essex County; 100 acres that ajoin the land of Benjamin Waggener, Robert Paine and Elexander Smith. This Nicholas Faulconer was located in the parish of Edetton, Cumberland County. Deed written on November 18, 1777, and recorded on Decem-ber 15, 1777. Witnesses: Nathan Waggener, Benjamin Waggener and Amby Armstrong (female). (Essex Co. D.B. 31, p. 364)
Ambrose Greenhill of Essex County wrote his will on April 12, 1790. He said, "I lend to my sister Martha Faulconer
my woman named Charlotte and a boy named Dixon; at her
decease, I give said Charlotte and boy Dixon to her son
Nicholas and to his heirs." Ambrose changed his mind,
however, and on August 24, 1 7 9 0 , he added a codicil to his will: "Boy named Dixon lent to sister Martha Faulconer, revoked." (WB 15, p. 188) The reason was not given. The will and indenture establishes that Martha Greenhill was married to a Nicholas Faulconer.Who, then, is this Nicholas Faulconer, and how does he
relate to the others? Francis Dreisbach researched this,
and concluded that David Faulconer, son of Nicholas and ?
Newton Faulconer, married Mary Bryom, daughter of Peter and Mary Nightingale Byrom about 1730. Essex County Deed Book 12, page 178, mentioned Peter Byrom and Mary, his wife, she being the late Mary Nightingale, the executrix of John Nightingale. This record was dated February 9, 1705/6. Peter Byrom later died, and his will was proved on February 16, 1719. (WB 3, pp. 131-3) He left his estate to his wife Mary; his son, John; and his daughters, Francis, Sarah, Elinor, Elizabeth and Mary. Executors were William Greenhill, and Mary, wife of the deceased. Mary Nightingale Byrom, then married Garritt Fitzsimmons. Order Book 6, page 39 says the following, that at a Court of Essex County held 20th day of January 1724, William Winston & Jane Gording, executors of William Gording's estate Vs. Garritt Fitzsimmons & Mary, his wife, the executors of Peter Byrom, decld for counter security ... it is ordered that Thomas Davis, William Greenhill & William Browne set apart this security. When Mary Nightingale Byrom Fitzsimmons died in 1756, she left one half of her land to each of her two daughters, Frances Meadors and Mary Faulkner. (WB 10, p. 95) Which Faulconer did the daughter marry? Probably David Faulconer, son of Nicholas I. Francis Dreisbach suggested that young Mary was born about 1712, married David Faulconer about 1730, and that one of their sons, Nicholas, was born about 1732-34.
David and Mary Byrom Faulconer may have had other children. For example, a Peter Faulconer appears briefly in some Orange County Court records. We guess that he was a son of David and Mary, and named for his grandfather, Peter Byrom.
Nicholas Faulconer, son of David and Mary, first appears on a list of titheables for Cumberland County, Virginia, in 1764. He listed a family of one. He married Martha Greenhill, and on November 18, 1777, she signed her release in Essex County to the right of dower to the 100 acres of land that was formerly the property of Mary Byrom. Therefore, it appears that this release is for the same land that had been passed down from Nicholas Faulconer's grandfather, Peter Byrom.
Martha Greenhill's parents are not known at present, but we suspect he was William Greenhill, who was an executor of Peter Byrom's estate, mentioned above.
Nicholas and Martha Greenhill Faulconer, both from Essex County, settled in Cumberland County, Virginia, by 1781. In October of that year, "Nicholas Folkner" put in a claim for 180 pounds of beef sold to the Revolutionary army. Another claim, in December 1781, was for 54 bushels of wheat.
Nicholas' name began appearing on the Cumberland County tax list, as head of the family, in 1782 and 1784, having 8 in the household. He continued to be listed as long as he lived, paying taxes on 160 acres. In 1804, the year of his death, the tax list named the following as being over 16 years of age: Nicholas Faulkner, Sr.; Nicholas, Jr.; John Murphy; and John Rogers. Charlotte was a female slave. Note that this Charlotte was the same slave as was mentioned in the will of Ambrose Greenhill given above.
On November 16, 1788, 150 people in Cumberland County
signed a petition, complaining of heavy taxes, and asking
for some relief.' Among the signers were Nicholas and
William Faulkner. On April 10, 1792, Nicholas Faulkner bought 160 acres
from Robert and Sarah Hill. This was a tract of land on
the branches of Willises River, and it cost 130 pounds.
(DB 7, p.186) This is probably the same 160 acres he had
been living on, and referred to in his annual tax list-
ing. He bought two acres from Joel Meggs on April 11,
1804. (DB 9, p. 434)In 1797-1798 Nicholas Faulkner built a dam and mill on
the Little Groom Quarter Creek, according to the Court
Orders. (COB 20, p. 36)Nicholas wrote his will in 1803 and it was proved in
1804. Here is a copy from Will Book 3, pages 259-260:In the name of Glod Amen, I Nicholas Faulkner of the
county of Cumberland, being in a low state of health,
but in perfect strength of mind and memory, do make
and constitute this my last Will and Testament, this

Rice D. Montague, Sr.At a Court held in Cumberland County the 24 day of September 1804, the last Will and Testament of Nicholas Faulkner was exhibited in Court and proved by the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Nicholas Faulkner who made oath and entered into bond with security accordingly. Cert-ificate is granted for obtaining letter of administration of his testators estate with the Will an-nexed.
Teste: Miller Woodson - C.IC.Since the will did not mention the wife, Martha, we assume she had died. Here, then, are the known/suspected children of Nicholas and Martha Greenhill Faulkner:
A. Nicholas David Faulkner, Jr., son of Nicholas and Martha Greenhill Faulconer, was first listed in the 1788 Personal Property Tax List of Cumberland County. According to Linda Polson, a descendant, Nicholas married Nancy Ann Allen on December 2, 1801. Nancy was the daughter of Vincent Allen.
The 1810 Cumberland County Census lists the family as follows:
1 female 45 & over
2 males 26-45 1 " 26-45
1 male under 10 2 " under 10Nicholas David Faulkner served as a Captain of the 17th Regiment of the Cumberland County Militia in the War of 1812. Nicholas served from December 27, 1813, to March 16, 1814, helping with the defense of Richmond and Nor-folk. (Butler, Virginia Militia Units)
In August 1851, Jesse Criddle of Cape Girardeau, Miss-
ouri, stated to the Court that he knew Nicholas Faulkner
and that he was indeed a Captain of the militia in Cum-
berland County, Virginia. He further stated that Nich-
olas returned to Cumberland County "in bad health."On December 14, 1815, this Court Order was given: "Nicholas Faulkner wishes Court Martial fines imposed upon him remitted. Rejected. #

Molly Faulkner, daughter of Nicholas and Martha Faulkner, never married. She wrote her will on February
2, 1819, and the following is an abstract from Will Book 6, page 141:
I Mary Faulkner of Cumberland County make this my last Will and Testament - to my brother Nicholas Faulkner ... To my sister Susanna Faulkner ... To my niece Jane Faulkner, one feather bed, furniture and other household goods; but if she should die without heirs of her body then the same bed and furniture is to descend to Martha Faulkner, the daughter of Lucy Faulkner. I give to Nancy Faulkner a new piece of home spun cloth for a dress, one corded petticoat and a new -- black table cloth and towel ... I give to Martha Faulkner, daughter of Nicholas, my riding saddle and deep blue striped dress and one pair of cotten stockings - the balance of my clothes to my sister Susanna Faulkner ... Husband and children from page 12-13 in Faulkner Book
Susannah Faulkner was named in the above will of her father. While we have no proof, it seems apparent that she married William Faulkner, a cousin. Thus far we have not connected him with the other Faulkner/Faulconers. He was listed in the 1783 tax records of Cumberland County for the first time. He was the head of a family of 1, which suggests he was not yet married. Order Book 14, 1784-1786, page 579, said that William Faulkner was to be exempted from payment of taxes in the future as to his own person. Probably this meant that he was poor and/or disabled. He signed the petition against high taxes in 1788, mentioned above.
William's name was on the Personal Property Tax List from 1783 to 1797, at which time he dropped out of sight. This writer believes he died. Order Book 20, page 93, said, "Susannah Faver, the wife of William Faver, relinguished her right of dower in and to a tract or parcel of land conveyed by the said William Faulkner to Thomas Johns - Court of Cumberland 28th day of May 1798." This writer believes the Clerk erred in calling her "Susannah Faver." She was Susannah Faulkner. Susanna Faulkner was paid $2.65 for 5 days attendance as a witness for William SaOnderson. (COB 21, 1801-1803, p. 212)
The 1810 Cumberland County Census listed Susannah Forkner as head of a household, female 26-45. In the home were 1 male 10-16 and one female 10-16.
The 1830 census again lists Susannah Faulkner as head of the houshold, female 70-80, 1 female 30-40 and 1 female slave 0-10.
Circumstantial evidence suggests that William and Susanna Faulkner had a least three sons, and maybe a daughter or two. Here are the sons:
CA. William Faulkner, Jr. was born about 1786. He was appointed "picker of Tobacco at Woodson's Wherehouse in Cartersville" and took the oath according to law. (OB 21, 1801-3, p. 380) He and his brothers moved to Davidson County, Tennessee, sometime in the 1820s. The 1830 census lists him and his wife, as 40-50 years old. And the 1840 census lists them as 50-60 years old. No children are known.
CB. Jesse R. Faulkner was born about 1797. He served in the War of 1812, was wounded in a battle in Annapolis, and later applied for an invalid's pension. Among the documents in the National Archives "Old war" Invalid File No. 24545 is this informative letter: (punctuation added)
Mrs. Susaner Faulkner, your son wanted me to wright you a few lines informing you his situation. He is
very badly wounded in his right hip and right nee. The hip is not very bad. I have taken four shot out
of his hip. It is getting well. The nee is very bad. I have taken several pieces of fractured bones
out. I am fearful he will have a stiff nee. if it is not stiff he will be a bad cripple. He was called
off on a Scouting party to see the movements of the British that was aiming to land at Anopolass. He was shot between Snowden's Iron Works and Anopoless. He was the only one shot. We suspect it was the British Spies that was there to see the situation of our army. I will attend close to him. I feel great interest in his case. He worked a great deal at my fathers in Botetott County Virginia. There I formed an acquaintance with him. I am the Sergent to attend on them that is sick. We both belong to the United States Service, do not be uneasy about your son. I think he will get well as the weather is cool. He serving his country and will be rewarded for it.
Yours respectfully. Mariland. November 2nd 1814.
