Training Course For Tortoise Carers

One person hit hard by the death of Steve Irwin was fellow conservationist and Wildlife Carers Group founder Nora Preston.

“I hope everything he has fought so hard for comes to fruition, so all his hard work wasn’t in vain, amongst them trying to stop crocodile trophy hunting,” she said.

“The Wildlife Carers group will certainly endeavour to assist his dreams and wishes are fulfilled.”

The group is holding it’s next training course on Saturday, September 30, this one concentrating on tortoise handling. “Now that it is spring again, our tortoises will become active as they go about searching for food and partners for mating ,so this is the time we need to be aware, and travel cautiously to try and avoid injuring our reptiles, who may be crossing the road,” Ms Preston said.

“Injuries can also be inflicted by other predators, other than human.

“Our tortoise training course will include handling, species identification, diet, disease, treatment, housing, and rescue.”

To distinguish a tortoise from a turtle is simple – a turtle has flippers, and a tortoise has feet.

To learn more, come along to the tortoise training course at 3pm at the Girl Guides Hall, behind the Scouts Hall in Erin Street, Queanbeyan.

Bookings are essential. Contact or email wildlife_carers_group@yahoo.com.au
