28 September 07 Our very rewarding
sighting of the rare Powerful Owl at the Australian National Botanic
Gardens (ANBG) on 22 September 2007, has shown us yesterday, Friday
27 September 2007, through another visit, that this bird has wiped
out our Sugar Gliders and Ringtail Possums, and has now moved on
to our Brushtail Possums. Yesterday we saw the Powerful Owl clutching
a very young female Brushtail Possum in its talons.

22 September 2007, Botanic Gardens,
2pm - FUNDRAISER - WILDLIFE CARERS GROUP INC is having their third
fundraiser. With Spring around, a more variety of species will be
around, visiting the capital, breeding, rearing their young, before
migrating. You will be able to enjoy another fun, relaxing and educational
guided tour through the Botanical Gardens, and learn more about
identifying our bird species, that is extremely important, to be
able to feed the correct diet to the sick, injured orphaned birds
you may have handed into you, and if that fails, then to identify
their call, and to correctly house them. If you are non member or
not a carer, you will enjoy identifying the many varied species
around in Canberra in the Spring season. Don't forget your sun screen,
hat, repellent, bottles of water, munchies, etc. Our guide is Jack
Holland, who has been a keen amateur bird watcher in the ACT area
for nearly 30 years. For the past 5 years he has been responsible
for organising the Canberra Ornithologists Group's (COG) very active
program of outings/field trips. During that time he has also lead
many trips, ranging from short local ones to weekend camp-outs.
Included in these have been a number of Birds for Beginners walks
in the Botanic Gardens. Venue: Botanic Gardens car park, bus stop,
near the Bookshop, Clunies Ross St. Acton. Date: Saturday 22 September
2007 (to be confirmed closer to the date) Time: 2pm Cost: $5 BOOKINGS

Day 2 included a veterinary visit with 2 injured wildlife, 1 bird and 1 reptile, handling, examination and treatment. Notes were given to the work experience student on wildlife rehabilitation of birds and lizards (part 1 and part 2 emailed), along with first aid and some basic hints notes. Day 3, a field trip to Oolong Sanctuary, committee that Nora Preston is the Vice President of, visit of the corroboree frog breeding enclosure, and a walk through the natural habitat, sighting of tree creeper, black wallaby, and gold, natural springs, along with other native flora and fauna. Day 4, Attendance of the Tribunal court for wildcare vs conservator of flora and fauna appeal for the rejection of their licence to take 35 joeys from the ACT. The tribunal heard how don fletcher/tams, who appeared instead of the conservator of flora and fauna, bashes the joeys to death. The tribunal commented 'not something to be practised at home'. The tribunal went away to consider the verdict. Wildcare lost the appeal, but expect to appeal the Tribunal's decision. Phoned nsw animal liberation to stop the 550 kangaroo killing around the ACT reserves, court injunction applied for on Friday 3/7/09, the unnecessary, inhumane slaughter already commenced, phone interview on Monday 13/7/09 to hear if the court injunction will be granted. The inhumane, unnecessary slaughter stopped on Friday 10/7/09, therefore the court injunction was withdrawn. Day 5, Rescue a female kangaroo from mugga lane, visit to Domestic Animals Services, with the dog faeces and urine still in the after hours holding pens, after 8 days of decaying in them, still only 1 bucket of water in one of the pens, the pens won't close, and still no secure padlocks installed to secure the safety of each dog, and to prevent anyone from letting the dogs out, or placing another dog into the same enclosure causing severe injuries and/or death, no food, the bucket is too big for small dogs to get to for drinking the water, no bedding, media interview.
