Route 60 Memorial Ride Journals Thursday, October 11, 2001 Will Rogers Claremore to Tipton Ford — The Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore is the best. I wondered what he would say about today’s terrorist attacks. As I walked about, from one of the many videos and audios playing, I heard him say, “This country is greater than any man or any part. They couldn’t ruin it if they tried.” A quote displayed on the front of the building is pictured below. "Live your life, so that whenever you lose you are ahead." Will Rogers Today I was losing time against the rain and wind when up ahead a man stood by a vintage pickup parked on the shoulder and motioned me to stop. Said he also did bike touring and ask all the questions. Introduced himself as Denis and offered me a lift to his place. Said anyone who didn’t accept a ride in the rain was a fool. I agreed and off we went to Missouri — “windshield wipers slapping time.” Denis had biked to Alaska and back on his fiftieth, was now 58 with six grandchildren, so we had a lot in common and talked touring and so on for the rest of the day. Went out to dinner at the UnderCliff Grill and Bar (a cliff cave was the back half of the building). Had a Mike’s Dam Good Sandwich. |
