Bridge Day

   Gauley Bridge to Lewisburg
— The Diner was warm and comfortable and the eggs were good. As usual, the local conversation drifted to bicycling. Joe Kincaid told me about other cyclist he had shuttled to the top, over Gauley Mountain and up to the New River Gorge rim. As this will save me a day of pushing bicycle, I accepted. Unbelievably, when I arrived at the ascent of Big Sewell Mountain, Robert Davis was there with a pickup to haul me to the top. Together, today’s pickup rides saved me two days of labor. On with bicycling, but still many hills and ridges to bicycle (or push) before Lewisburg.
Took this picture from the park overlook. When I attempted to ride out on the bridge, road workers warned me that bicycles weren't allowed. Don't know if this is true? As I had just crossed in Joe's truck, I didn't need to test the alleged law.
A West Virginia Super One, one lane width paved with gravel shoulders to dodge oncoming traffic. Actually, WV roads were good.
From high above, the New River rapids don't look so scary.
