New On the Listening Rack
Badly Drawn Boy: Bewiderbeast
This is definitely something I would recommend anyone to pick up. If you like Nick Drake, but can imagine him making albums now and collaborating with the likes of Beck and the occasional Counting Crow, this is a CD for you. 18 tracks, interspersed with small interludes a la Cornershop. Damon Gough (aka Badly Drawn Boy) has released his first album to a fair amount of hype overseas, unfortunately, it hasn't reached here since no one I know has heard of this guy. Acoustic guitars, cello, a French horn here or there. There are some great songs on this CD that I am sure you all will like.
Toad the Wet Sprocket: Coil
Not quite sure what a Wet Sprocket is but this band always provides. As an introductory CD I would always recommend Pale (their second) which is a great slow balled disc. This one combines a little bit of the radio friendly quality they have picked up over the years with the skill of a slow tune to romance any woman. Poppy rock with impeccable lyrics: "I sowed a field of rose and reaped a whipping rod / and everything I've held too tight inside / could make a part of me die." I like that line, cool cover too.
Chemical Brothers: Surrender
Electronic phenomena. Not sure why a piece of my musical interest is straying this way but I don't really regret it. Guess it started with Moby and then took on a life of its own. This CD is what I hear to be one of their better ones and the sounds that come from your stereo when it plays are quite unique. Danceable with creativity, uniqueness and its own voice. Check these guys out if you are lacking a nice techno tune that isn't hardcore like Prodigy. Great for backgrounds.
