He ran away to sea and served in the British Navy on the Vindictive, Investigator, Resolute, and North Star. He then served in the Coast Guard on Southampton and Pembroke. He served on the 1850 voyage of the Investigator as a bosun's mate under Capt. Robert McClure to find the Northwest Passage, entering the Beufort Sea from the Pacific. They discovered and explored Baring Island and Victoria Island in what became the Canadian North West Territories. Their ship was lost to ice at Mercy Bay. They had to sledge 500 miles eastward across the Arctic, led by Lt. Cresswell, until they met a relief ship, HMS Phoenix, at the southern tip of Ellsmere Island at the convergence of Wellington Strait and Barrow Channel.
