He shared the same tent with Jewett and with George F. Estabrook (Es-161). Albert wrote a letter to his brother (probably Zura) which appears near the end of this genealogy. He was "keeping company" with Emmeline Glazier Estabrook (Es-260), who was about 16 years old at the time. He wrote to her during his service in the Civil War. In one letter he wrote that Uncle Sam had issued him a rifle, but he hadn't had a chance to use it yet on the rebels. Albert died on April 6, 1865 from a "fever" in Washington, D.C. H Company was fighting at Appomattox, Virginia at this time. The previous winter had been hard on the men from the 20th Maine. They had long marches in bad weather, and often slept in the open on the ground. Albert was 21 years old when he died. Emmeline later married his brother Zura.

CIVIL WAR LETTER FROM ALBERT HARTFORD WILLIAMS (Wi-91)

They were kind enough to let me borrow it (Barbara Ann Estabrook: barbara54@juno.com), to make a xerox copy. The following letter accompanied it.
