H, 20th Regiment of Maine Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Pvt. on the 31day of August 1862 at Portland ME". His tentmate was Gus Walker from Hodgdon, Aroostook Co., Maine. He was wounded in his side at the Battle of Gettysburg ("shot while carrying the flag"). His thumb was also shot off during this battle. Mansfield was honorably mustered out and discharged on June 4, 1865 in Portland, Cumberland Co., Maine. In the 1870 census, he and his family are living with his father in Hodgdon, Aroostook Co., Maine, along with his sisters Bertha and Meriam. In the 1880 census of Hodgdon, his mother and sister Bertha were living with them. In 1905, he was living in Penobscot Co., Maine.
Note: He added the 2nd m to his surname during the Civil War.
