SPAIN COME GOOD LATE, ADVANCE TO 2ND ROUND
Tunisia took an early lead against Spain in the last game of the second group phase, but the Spanish fought back and scored three within the last 20 minutes to win 3-1.
Jaziri did some fantastic work against the Spanish defense to play in Mnari who netted his own rebound to give the Tunisians an early lead. The game stayed 1-0 but the Spanish were the more threatening team for the most part. Raul came on as a substitute and stabbed home an equaliser. The Spanish took the lead five minutes later as Fernando Torres netted his second of the tournament. Torres then took sole position of tournament top scorer, grabbing his third of the tournament and his team's third of the game from the penalty spot. Spain have now qualified for the second round, Tunisia's hopes of qualification are quite slim.
Not only did the Ukraine do their points tally a world of good today, they brought their goal difference back to an even 0. They stuffed Saudi Arabia 4-0 (the same scoreline they were on the other end of against Spain) and were the strongest team throughout the game. Andriy Rusol gave the Ukraine a 4th-minute lead, converting Kalinichenko's corner. Rebrov doubled the lead on 36 minutes with a wonderful long-range blast that left 'keeper Zaid in no-man's land. 40 seconds into the second half Andriy Shevchenko helped many of your fantasy teams by grabbing Ukraine's third, Kalinichenko providing the assist. Shevchenko turned provider, setting up a goal from the deserved man of the match, Maksym Kalinichenko. The result sends Saudi Arabia out of the tournament.
Switzerland eliminated Togo from Group G in the 2pm kick-off today, having the better of the play and registering a 2-0 victory. Alex Frei scored in the first quarter of an hour to give the Swiss the lead. Emmanuel Adebayor was among the chances for Togo but neither he nor anybody else could put the ball in the back of the net. The game was finished off with a great goal from Tranquillo Barnetta in the 88th minute, his 18-yard blast going in off the far post. Switzerland overtake France in Group G and a draw against South Korea will send both the Swiss and the Koreans through.
THE KOREA COMEBACK
South Korea scraped a point in the last few minutes against France this evening, drawing 1-1.
The French took the lead early on, Thierry Henry slotting the ball home after latching onto Sylvain Wiltord's deflected shot. A second was not given, the referee instead choosing to penalise Florent Malouda. With 10 minutes left in the game Manchester United's Ji-Sung Park grabbed an equaliser following some sloppy defending from the 1998 World Champions. Zinedine Zidane received his second booking of the tournament, meaning he will miss his country's final group game against Togo. The result leaves winless France edging second place with 2 points and South Korea strong favourites to qualify with 4 points at the top of Group G. Togo play Switzerland tomorrow.
The reigning World Champions, Brazil, booked their second round place today, beating Australia by two goals to nil. The Socceroos looked strong and the South Americans were again less than impressive. Adriano shot home from 18 yards early in the second half to give the champions the lead. Substitute Fred doubled the tally when he netted Robinho's rebound which had come back off the post. Australia went close several times, Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka having key chances. Brazil are now through with 6 points but Australia are still looking good for second place with 3. The group is wrapped up on Thursday when Brazil meet Japan and Australia clash with the Croatians.
In today's other Group F game, Japan and Croatia battled to a goalless draw. Japanese 'keeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi denied Croatia victory with an excellent penalty save. Both sides had good chances - Croatia most notably, Srna's spot-kick and Kranjcar's rattling of the bar. The 0-0 draw didn't help either team's chances of qualification to the second round.
GHANA STUN CZECHS, PORTUGAL THROUGH, USA HOLD ON
Ghana shocked the Czech Republic, and everybody else, in a Group E game on Saturday, winning 2-0.
Ghana opened the scoring early, Asamoah Gyan striking past Petr Cech in the 2nd minute. Jan Koller and Milan Baros were both missing for Czech Republic who had to rely on midfield maestros Pavel Nedved and Tomas Rosicky - neither of which could produce a goal. Tomas Ujfalusi was sent off in the 66th minute of the game, also conceding a penalty. Asamoah Gyan hit the post from the penalty spot, though and the game stayed at 1-0. Ghana wrapped up a shock, yet deserved, victory when Sulley Muntari beat Czech on 82 minutes, making it 2-0. Ghana have a great chance of advancing to the round of 16 now, they play their final group game against the USA on Thursday.
Portugal joined the list of teams who have already secured their second round place by beating Iran 2-0. Neither team could score in the first half, but Deco broke the duck in the second half, blasting a shot past the Iranian 'keeper. Cristiano Ronaldo doubled the Portugese tally from the penalty spot in the 80th minute. The victory also meant that Iran cannot advance to the second round.
Also today, USA held on for a point against Italy, drawing 1-1 in a match that saw three sending-offs. The Italians took the lead on 22 minutes as Alberto Gilardino headed in a Pirlo free-kick. The Americans levelled five minutes later though, Bobby Convey's free-kick was sliced at by Zaccardo and the ball went into his own net. A minute later Daniele De Rossi got sent off for Italy, a vicious elbow on Brian McBride being cause for a straight red. Just before half-time, both teams were down to ten men when Pablo Mastroeni's sliding challenge was also disciplined via red card. Things looked bad for the USA when two minutes after the interval, Eddie Pope was booked for the second time, leaving the Americans down to nine men. They managed to hold on though and seemingly took the lead when Beasley netted, but Brian McBride's offside position was enough to rule it out. The game ended 1-1, neither team being eliminated or advancing from the group.
NEVER MIND THE BALLACKS TOPS POLL
Congratulations to Neil Barnett, whose team name 'Never Mind the Ballacks' has won our poll for best team name this year! Ryan Dawson's 'Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Mr Klinsmann?' and Kurt Walker's 'Svengland' came close behind, Mark James' 'Ten World Class Stars and an Albion Player' and Yorkie's 'White Rose Blitzkrieg FC' being the other two that comprised our top 5 listing.
ARGENTINA & HOLLAND GO THROUGH
Defeats over fellow group teams Serbia & Montenegro and Ivory Coast, respectively, sent Argentina and Holland through to the knock-out phase.
Argentina were impressive as they destroyed Serbia & Montenegro 6 - 0, Maxi Rodriguez (2), Cambiasso, Messi, Tevez and Crespo the scorers. This was not good news for Ted Edwards whose 'Herr Pistol's Panzer Division' contains the Serbian goalkeeper and two defenders. To add insult to injury Krstajic was booked. The day got worse for Ted when Emmanuel Eboue conceded two more goals against Holland who won 2-1 meaning Ted lost an incredible 17 points today! It drops him to the bottom of the table. Better luck tomorrow Ted.
Holland also secured their second round place with a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. Robin Van Persie got the Dutch off to a good start, smashing in a free kick from 20-odd yards. Arjen Robben then put Ruud Van Nistelrooy in a good position, the Man Utd striker finishing with precision. Bakary Kone gave the Ivorians hope with a stunning run and long-range strike to pull them within one before half-time. The second half saw no goals though and the Dutch booked themselves a place in the next round.
In the late kick-off today Angola kept their World Cup hopes alive, managing to hold Mexico to a 0-0 draw. Angola have a chance of making the next round if they can knock off Iran and Portugal can defeat Mexico, both games next Wednesday.
ENGLAND ADVANCE, EDGE T&T 2-0
England joined hosts Germany and Ecuador in qualifying for the knock-out phase of the 2006 World Cup today.
England engaged in a tough game against Trinidad & Tobago who put up a good fight. Frank Lampard went close to netting on several occasions, Peter Crouch also missing a few chances. The opening 15 minutes of the second half saw little change from the first as the scoreline was kept at 0-0. Wayne Rooney then made his first appearance of the tournament, joining Aaron Lennon in a double substitution by Sven-Goran Eriksson, replacing Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher. Peter Crouch made the breakthrough on 83 minutes, leaping at the far post to convert a David Beckham cross with his head. As the game was nearing its close, Beckham again played a vital part, rolling the ball to Steven Gerrard who blasted a shot past the keeper from outside the box. The game finished 2-0, sending England through to the round of 16 to play either Germany or Ecuador.
In the early Thursday kick-off, Ecuador sent Costa Rica crashing out of the tournament with a 3-0 victory, also sealing a first-ever World Cup second round appearance for their country. Carlos Tenorio and Agustin Delgado doubled their tournament tallies and substitute Kaviedes finished off the scoring with a late goal. Ecuador's victory also sealed Poland's exit from the tournament after they lost to Germany 1-0 on Wednesday.
In the late Thursday kick-off, Sweden's Freddie Ljungberg scored very late with a nice header to put his team in pole position to join England in qualifying for the knock-out phase. Trinidad & Tobago still have a chance, but they would need to beat Parguay on Tuesday, hope that England beat Sweden and then it would be down to goal difference.
