MANHUNTER

There is just no way I can do justice to this fantastic film the way that John Mounsey, Mike Pitt, Vincent Thibert, and others have done.

[Maybe it's a guy thing!]

So consider this page our little female tribute, then go visit these other great websites. I'm trying to recruit them into my new "William Petersen Admiration Society", a new WebRing.

Until then, look for some of them in the old "The William Petersen Webring".

Will graham is a retired FBI behavioral scientist,
a forensic psychologist, a profiler. He is a manhunter. Will is pressed back into service by his old friend and colleague, Jack Crawford. Jack uses his intimate knowledge of Will's weak spots to coerce him out of retirement, because he knows Will is the only man who can catch the serial killer know as The Tooth Fairy. This madman targets whole familes, and has struck twice. Jack Crawford needs Will to find the Tooth Fairy before he strikes again.

"Suave Psychos"

Will Graham loves his wife and son. While flying between cities, searching frantically for the slayer of families, he sleeps, and dreams of his own family. He's home, working on his boat with his son. He sees his wife in his mind's eye.

Terrorvision: Panopticism in the Age of Totally Hidden Video
(About half-way down you'll reach "Manhunter".)

Confused and very frightened, Will hesitates to do the one thing he must in order to catch the killer. He has to re-capture the mindset of a serial killer he put behind bars ... the infamous Hannibal Lector. Ever wonder how the brilliant Hannibal came to be in prison in the first place? Will Graham put him there, though it nearly cost him his life and his sanity. This is Hannibal the Cannibal (chillingly played by Brian Cox) before Anthony Hopkins took over the part in "Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal".

"Manhunter"

The Tampa Tribune ran two articles, almost exactly alike, except the theme of the first is Serial Killers, while the second is the films of Michael Mann. Guess which movie fits both categories?? Yup. Here's the excerpt from the Michael Mann article:
MANHUNTER (1986): Before Thomas Harris wrote "The Silence of the Lambs", his mystery novel "The Red Dragon" introduced bloodthirsty killer Hannibal Lecter as a minor character. The "Dragon" story became Mann's "Manhunter", a viciously intimidating killer-thriller about a psychologically troubled FBI agent (William L. Petersen) who solves crimes by putting himself in the murderer's frame of mind. Includes a "Miami Vice" grip on Mann's quick-cut editing techniques and an unforgettable replay of "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida". Superior suspense.

Fan Trax: Director's Cuts
"Red Dragon"

Michael Mann's original cut of "Manhunter" with the "Red Dragon" credits logo. Everyone who is fan of this film should know that "Red Dragon" is the title of the book the film was based upon. Here we also have extra scenes with the William Petersen character of Will Graham, who was profiling criminals on screen way before "Millennium" or "Profiler". The added scenes add more depth to Graham and his search for the serial killer known as "The Tooth Fairy".
A brilliant film made better.

In the end, good triumphs over evil. But just barely, and at what cost to Will Graham? There are two endings to this movie, depending on which cut of the film you see. Will survives in both. One has him and Jack Crawford in a warm, orangey long shot on Dollarhyde's dock; the other has Will, battered and bruised, showing up at the door of the next family on the Tooth Fairy's list. He's invited in; they know who he is and what's been happening, but all Will wants is to see them, to see the ones who got away. It's a more satisfying ending as far as I'm concerned. As happened before with Lector, Will now has a little bit of Dollarhyde in him, and "it's all about seeing, isn't it, my man?".
