January 1999: A Manila Christmas
Two
days ago, I passed by an exclusive village somewhere here in Manila. I
can remember being fascinated by the Christmas decors that adorned the
houses there. In fact, one of the gates there was wrapped with glittering
Christmas lights, resembling the top of a boxed gift. Even the trunks
of the trees in the said village were surrounded by lights.
As
I came out of the village, a young boy wearing a dirty white shirt and
an old pair of shorts approached me. He begged for some change so that
his family can just have some food to eat that evening.
I
had a realization that evening: Christmas is not only the time of loving
and caring for others, it is also the time when one can best see the disparity
that exists between rich and poor in this city.
