Picket
Fences

Picket
Fences is one of the rare television shows these days that has substance.
It is set in the small Midwestern town of Rome, Wisconsin
and it revolves around the diverse characters that live there. It boasts
one of the best ensembles of actors and actresses in television, including
Tom Skerrit as the sheriff, Kathy Baker as his doctor wife, Laureen Holly
and Costas Mandaylor as mismatched sheriff deputies, Ray Waltson as the
firm judge, Kelly Connell as the sometimes spacey medical examiner, and
Fyvush Finkel as the clownish lawyer with a golden soul.
Normal
things happen in Rome (i.e. husband and wife worrying about their marriage
as well as their daughter's sex life), but so do controversial (i.e. police
brutality and abortion court battles) and bizarre things (i.e. the mayor
dying of spontaneous combustion, a woman freezing to death inside a large
freezer and a cow giving birth to a human child). But whatever the kinds
of problems that arrive, the people of Rome are always able to deal with
them using a mix of emotion and reason.
Picket
Fences has been critically acclaimed for the four seasons that it has
been aired. It has won numerous Emmy awards, including Outstanding Drama
Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting
Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and
Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Typical
Episodes
To
give you a taste of a typical Picket Fences episode, I've decided
to post the synopsis of two shows (from different seasons) below.
Pilot
Episode (Sept. 18, 1992)
A carjacker
attacks Mayor Pugen, who pulls a gun, disarms the thug, then kills him.
Risking the town's rage but loyal to the law, Sheriff Brock arrests the
mayor for murdering an unarmed man.
Dog
Eat Dog (Oct. 20, 1995)
Deputy
Maxine Stewart is grilled in court for police brutality after a tussle
with a rather surly man dressed in a bratwurst costume. Meanwhile, Dr.
Jill Brock is suspicious when her daughter Kimberly pays another doctor
a visit -- but tries to cover it up.
