    What is the Cavy Project?

The 4-H Cavy Project is an educational program designed to educate youth...

4-H youth in the Cavy Project learn:

What is a Cavy?

  • Cavy is another name for Guinea Pig.

What do you learn in the Cavy Project?

  • To properly care for cavies.
  • How to examine your cavy for illness.
  • What to do if your cavy becomes ill.
  • To identify the 13 accepted Breeds of cavies.
  • To identify the 22 accepted Varieties of cavies.
  • Terminology used with Cavies.
  • How to show cavies.
  • How to operate a breeding program for cavies.

What if I don't have a guinea pig?

  • That's good.  If you don't own a cavy, you can find out all about them BEFORE you purchase one.  It's actually a good idea to find out about the different breeds, varieties, and quality of a cavy before you buy one.

Is a show quality cavy expensive?

  • No, not at all.  Most show quality cavies run about $20, the same as you'd pay in a pet store for a pet quality cavy.

I already own a guinea pig, do I have to get another one?

  • No, you can participate in the project with what you have.  If you want to show you cavy you may choose to get another one.

What if I want to learn about Cavies but don't want to show them?

  • It is not necessary to show your cavy to be a 4-H Cavy Project.

What if I don't want to breed my cavy?

  • It is not necessary to breed your cavy to be in a 4-H Cavy Project.

How do I find a 4-H Cavy Project near me?

  • Contact your County 4-H Office.

What if there isn't a 4-H Cavy Project in the Community Club I want to join?

  • You may join any 4-H Cavy Project in your county without changing Community Clubs.  You can even start your own Cavy Project.  Your County 4-H Office has all the information you need.
