After his service, Calvin returned to Kentucky where he learned the trade of wagon making. The family emigrated to Iowa in 1849 [Henry County, IA for the 1850 federal census].

I have been told that he was staying in the boarding house of Jane Francis Johnson Lindsey in 1850 (located in Iowa). He married her daughter, Emily Frances Linsey, in 1851, in Iowa and emigrated to Dallas, Texas in the fall of that same year. In 1854, he sold his Dallas business and moved to Shasta County, CA, where he mined for a year before commencing the wagon making business. He remained there until 1863 [he is listed in the 1860 federal census] when he relocated to Walla Walla County, WA [his family is listed in 1870 federal census]. In 1870 his uninsured wagon and casket making business was destroyed by fire. He rebuilt his business but then moved to Portland, Oregon [The last tax year in Walla Walla City was for 1871].

Calvin relocated to Oregon City, Oregon, about 1875. Emily had died and he married Lydia Ann [bio. says Jane] Forster, a native of Oregon. I have been told that there is a gravestone in Portland listing Calvin and Emily beside one another, and next to them, Charles Speck [the deceased husband of Josephine] and an infant.

A Portland, Oregon directory lists Wineset & Scripture, wagon and carriage makers, blacksmiths and undertakers, at Main NE corner 5th, Albina. Listed members of the firm include Calvin P. Wineset, Silas F. Scripture, Clarence W. Porter, a black-smith. The same directory list Luther Wineset as a lather in Portland.

Calvin served in the Mexican War joining 10-Sep-1847 at Bardstown, Nelson County, KY. He mustered-in on 3-Oct-1847 at Louisville, KY. His unit was Company C, Kentucky Volunteers. He was discharged 25-Jul-1848 in Louisville, KY. His widow, Lydia A. Winesett, obtained a pension in 1894 based on his service. His military records list his surname as Winsett without the middle "e". This could be because there were many Winsett's in the Bardstown area from before 1790 and the recruiting agent may have assumed he was a member of that family. The Nelson County Winsetts later took Wimsatt as their surname.

Nothing is currently known about Emily other than she was born in 1835 in IL and died in 1874 probably in Portland, Oregon.

Calvin and Lydia were married in the Congregational Church in Oregon City. She died in Portland (Death Certificate No. 3165). Calvin's daughter Josephine married Charles A. Speck in the same church that same year.

Calvin and Emily's known children are:
1. Edgar Allen (13-Jan-1856 in Shasta County, CA) who married Nettie Hurd;
2. Josephine Dely (22-Jan-1858 in Shasta County, CA) who married Charles A. Speck 13-Nov-1877 in Clackamas County, OR;
3. Unknown son born and died in 1859;
4. Francis May (16-Jun-1861 to 25-Aug-1861) born in Shasta County, CA;
5. Lucian Bonaparte (Late, Lute and Luther) born 22-Jul-1862 in Shasta County, CA,as reported in the Shasta Courier dated 26-Jul-1862) and died 12-Aug-1941 in Portland County, OR, he was named after a brother of Emily;
6. Frederick (about 1872 - unknown). He was evidently alive in 1881 at the time of the guardianship case below.

Unnamed son and Francis May Winesett are buried in Shasta Union Cemetery.

There was 1881 Clackamas County guardianship case regarding Lucian and Frederick Winesett. Calvin applied to be appointed their guardian because of a legacy in an eastern state but no information was included in the file regarding the name of the decedant nor where it was probated. Calvin stated Lucian was about 17 and Frederick was about 7.

Calvin and Lydia's known children are:
1. George Calvin(1876/8),
2. Thomas Henry(23-Apr-1880),
3. Augustus Dow (18-Feb-1881 to 10-Mar/May-1950),
4. Myrtle A. (1883),
5. Perlie Milton (1-Apr-1886 to 18-Jun-1886);
6. Israel L. (about 1888), and
7. Gerald H. (1890).

A Dolly Winesett married in Multnomah County, OR, 23-Feb -1909. This entry appeared on Ancestry.com but did not give the name of the spouse. The webmaster suspects Dolly may be the youngest daughter of Calvin and Lydia born about 1883.

Some dates are approximate based on the ages given by Lydia in Calvin's 1893 probate estate. The names and ages Lydia gave for the children of the first marriage differ somewhat from other sources. Edgar was listed as living in New York City, Josephine was listed as a McGoon rather than a Speck. Josephine and Lucian were both listed as living in Portland. Lydia and the remaining children were living in Oregon City at the time.

The good reverend wrote that five of the six children of the second marriage were living. He lists Israel as one of the living children but does not mention Augustus who survived Calvin according to his mother. Lydia does does not list Israel as surviving Calvin. I have lost most traces of the children.

A 1895 Marion County, OR, census lists Thomas, age 15, as a student, height 5 feet and weight 90 pounds. His residence was given as Salem. I was told that Thomas was in an institution for the blind but have not seen the record.

I also found Edgar's son, Clarence Wilbert Wineset (22-Jun-1883 to 9-Feb-1974) who died in Corvallis or Benton County, OR. His 27-May-1937 social security card application filed when he lived in Portland lists his parents as Allen Edgar Wineset and Nettie Hurd, and states he was born in Portland. Clarence married Rosa Finley, age 17, in 1905. The 1930 census states that his first marriage was at age 17, does this mean he had a previous marriage?

Lydia died in Portland County on 30-Dec-1922, Certificate 3165 and Lute died in Portland, 12-Aug-1941, Certificate 2494. Any information on Calvin and his descendants would certainly be appreciated.
