KITCHEN EXPERIMENTS -- MEASURING THE ANGLE

Experiment 1 -- Using a funnel

Particles measured:

  • Rice
  • Mung beans

    Equipment used:
  • Funnel
  • A large piece of paper
  • Clinometer

    Method:
    1. Place the large piece of paper on the table
    2. Hold the funnel over the piece of paper with one hand
    3. Pour rice into the funnel slowly so that a conical pile would form on the paper
    4. Place the clinometer on the slope to measure the angle of repose
    5. Repeat the same procedures for mung beans

    Results:
Different particles have different angles of repose
  • Rice: 38°
  • Mung beans: 29°

    Comments:
The force of particles dropping from the funnel will cause them to continue their movement down the slope.
