KITCHEN EXPERIMENTS -- MEASURING THE ANGLE

Experiment 2 -- Using a cylindrical food container

Particles measured:

  • Rice
  • Mung beans

    Equipment used:
  • Plastic cylindrical food container (with lid and transparent bottom)
  • Clinometer

    Method:
    1. Put rice into the cylindrical container until it is half-full and put the lid on
    2. Place the cylindrical container on its side
    3. Shake it until the rice inside is levelled
    4. Roll the container very slowly. The surface of the rice inside grows steeper
    5. Stop as soon as the rice grains begin to show the tendency of falling
    6. Use the clinometer to measure the angle of repose
    7. Repeat the same procedures for mung beans

    Results:
Different particles have different angles of repose The angle of repose of:
  • Rice was 41°
  • Mung beans was 36°

    Comments:
The rolling of the container must be steady and slow. There has to be trial and error before you know when to stop to achieve the highest angle.
