PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE  

Fine Arts Residencies and Grants  

Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, Grand Island , NE (1976) One month Artist -in-Residence. Gallery exhibition of original quilts, children’s classes in design / geometry and quilting demonstrations at a living history museum.  

Oregon Arts Commission, Klamath Art Center , Klamath Falls , Oregon , , (1978) Six month CETA Artist-in-Residence for Klamath County . Set up silkscreen studio for classes in stencil and photo silkscreen. Gave art workshops in public elementary schools, at the local college and the YMCA. Designed newsletters and various publicity for local non-profits. Created a series of seven 24 x24 in. acrylic paintings inspired by the eastern Oregon desert, Prayers for the Earth. The paintings were created to be hung in a public building and were exhibited with the work of two other artists-in-residence at the local art center.  

Metropolitan Arts Council of Omaha, Omaha , NE (1981) Ten month CETA Artist-in-Residence. Produced public art in the form of murals, paintings and demonstrations. Folk Art Coordinator. Projects included a 4x10 ft. painting for the American Indian Center celebrating land that had been returned to native Americans by the US Government, a mural designed for the AFL-CIO as a Labor Day celebration and promotion of the arts council projects at fairs and in schools.  As one of a team of eight artists and performers, I was the only one asked to attend board meetings due to my ability to offer an alternative perspective.  

ArtsBridge,  Parkersburg , WV / Marietta , OH (1995-1998)  An arts agency serving the Mid-Ohio Valley . Artist in the Schools, Exhibitor, Workshops, Entertainment at arts functions and fairs. Major piece (Art Quilt) commissioned for lobby.  

Honoring the Source: Artists and Ecologists Celebrate the River. An independent project which included a regional juried exhibition of visual art, an original choreographed performance by a professional dance company, original music and an educational exhibit on the theme of the Ohio River. The project premiered at the Hermann Fine   Arts Center , Marietta College , September 5, 1998 and ran through October 9 of that year. It was funded through grants by the Ohio River Border Initiative, a joint project of the Ohio Arts Council and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts and the Ohio Division of Wildlife. I was aided in organizing this project by a small group of artists and scientists concerned with the chemical pollution of the Ohio River . The exhibit entertained and raised awareness of the river ecosystem and its history.  

Arts Administration 

Wheeler Gallery, Providence , RI (1971) Attendant. Duties included opening and closing gallery, addressing and mailing invitations, serving food and wine at openings,  and answering visitor’s questions concerning the art on exhibit.  

Church Gallery, Providence , RI (1972-3) Co-director of a non-profit gallery. Duties included recruiting exhibitors, packing and transportation, hanging shows and publicity.  

Confluence Gallery,  Denver, CO (1976) Volunteer Board Member of a cooperative gallery of fine crafts, in charge of members’ traveling shows. Exhibited contemporary quilts and stained glass, helped with retail sales.  

Parkersburg Art Center , Parkersburg , WV (1994-95) Staff. Education Coordinator.  Hired instructors, scheduled, promoted and taught classes, worked with docents and tour groups, produced art education newspaper distributed to Wood Co. schools, designed and produced newsletters and posters, reorganized library, organized extra exhibits, worked at fundraisers. Liaison with public school teachers. Wrote organizational grants. 

Riverside Artists Gallery, Marietta , OH (1998) Volunteer. On Steering Committee which organized this cooperative gallery. Arranged for consultant through a program by WV Arts and Humanities. Researched policies of other cooperatives and helped write by-laws. Currently a consignment artist with gallery.  

Museum in the Community, Hurricane, WV (1999) Staff. Exhibits and Program Coordinator. Researched and hung exhibitions, designed newsletter, ads, invitations and signage, arranged for and scheduled classes and lectures. 

Teaching  

Educational Service Units 9 and 3,  Hastings and Omaha , NE (1975) Artist-in-the Schools. Federal grant program. Classes in design and geometry through the techniques of piecing and  quilting.  

Oregon Institute of Technology. Klamath Falls , OR (1978) During my residency I lectured on “Design in Nature”. Shot original 35mm slides for this series.  

Lundblade Glassart Studio. Klamath Falls , OR . (summer 1979) Taught stained glass classes and did wholesale purchasing and retail sales in trade for studio space and use of tools for private commissions.  

Denver Free University, Denver, CO (fall 1982) Wilderness Survival and First Aid. Discussions on various subjects from orienteering to hypothermia were discussed with students while exploring the foothills of the Rockies on day hikes.  

ArtsBridge, Parkersburg , WV / Marietta , OH , Artist-in–the-Schools (1995-8) Workshops on the elementary level. Using the theme of quilting, I taught geometry and design basics by discussion and hands-on work, using basic shapes to create paper “quilts”. I also related history and social movements to this unique American art form. Lessons in cultural diversity were taught through the study of African American and Hawaiian quilts. Children also did some actual quilting on a Children’s Community Quilt – a memorial to children who had died through violence.  

Capitol High School , Charleston , WV (spring 2002) Demonstration and lecture on Shibori, a traditional form of Japanese textile dyeing.  

West Virginia State College, Institute, WV (summer 2002) Charleston Stage Company Fine Arts Camp. Two week course in batik and shibori for junior and senior high age students.  

Design and Quilting. Numerous workshops and talks on contemporary textile design have been done privately and in connection with exhibits over the years. I often use a slide show of quilt collections and my own photography to illustrate the lectures.  

Graphic Design  

Fahlgren Advertising Agency,  Parkersburg , WV (1982-83, 1994) Temp and Freelance Production Artist and Art Director’s Assistant. Layout, Comprehensive and Mechanical preparation, stat camera operation, type ordering, locating and organizing  models and props for photographic shoots.  

Clear Creek Graphics, Inc. Denver, CO (1983-88) Officer of the Corporation. Duties included all those of a small business owner, including technical aspects of a high-quality two-color print ship: customer service, bookkeeping, collections, ordering stock, inventory, lease negotiations, vendor relations, sales, darkroom, graphics, bindery, deliveries, training and overseeing up to four employees. Sold the business to a larger corporation in 1988.  

KRMA-TV Corporation for Public Broadcasting,  Denver, CO (1988-92) Graphic and Broadcast Designer. As a member of the Marketing Department for a PBS station, I designed publications, ads, posters, sets and signage. Some broadcast design and animation. Dealt with and took bids from outside vendors (usually printers) met with volunteers, students, producers and engineers, helped plan fund raising campaigns. Involved with art department budgeting, purchasing and in the move from traditional graphic equipment to a computerized system.  

S.W. Graphics, Parkersburg , WV (1995-96), Graphic Designer and Sign Technician.  Designed all signage (engraving, sublimation, metal photo, vinyl and advertising specialties). Fabricated all vinyl banners and signs. Some installation.
