Chapter 5: Titles Assigned

After another week of email being exchanged between the two of them, Jay was slated to begin his studying for his final exams. Since Kay was now such a prominent figure in his mind, he found this to be very difficult to do, and he continued to write to her as a means of balancing his mind. He told Kay about the exams that he had to study for and she advised him that he should concentrate on his studies and not worry about writing to her. Seeing the opportunity to apply more charm, he did not take her advise.

Jay then received his second letter from Kay, who once again included the same cheesy markings on the envelope to make it easy for Jay to recognize. This time, the envelope was just as thick as the last one, so he expected there to be a gift for him. This time, she had bought him some Sailor Moon collector cards, and a Sailor Moon handkerchief, because he had mentioned to her that Sailor Moon was one of his favourite cartoons. The letter consisted of more of the same conversational content that they had shared since the beginning.

She told Jay that she originally thought that he was one of her friends playing a joke on her by pretending to be Canadian. She then told him that she knows that he is for real. She also told him about why she chose him over all of the other people who have emailed her. She told him that it was his politeness and the fact that he always included song lyrics at the end of his email messages. It became apparent to Jay that she was one of those girls that reads a lot of romance novels, and that she thought of him as someone who came directly from a romance novel.

Jay then wrote her back a thank you message to convey his thanks for the collector cards and handkerchief. He also told her that he has always written his email with a song lyric. Her reply proved to him that she thought he was from a romance novel. She claimed that she had been searching all of her life for someone who cared as much about her as he did, and that she considered him to be her "unofficial boyfriend". However, she did tell Jay that if the two of them did start an official relationship that it would be very difficult for the two of them, given the physical distance that separates the two of them. The two of them would never be able to hold hands, and to touch each other. Therefore, she created a title for Jay that the two of them could share without actually feeling the pain associated with such a relationship. The titles that she assigned for the two of the was "Very Close Friend", or VCF. Despite his initial reaction to the blatantly cheesy, Jay agreed with her and called her his VCF. What Jay didn't tell her was that his untamed heart really thought of her as his girlfriend.

Jay replied to her immediately and told her that he agreed with her 100%, except that he also believes that the future is unwritten, and that the two of them may well find a way to each other sometime in the future. In other words, Jay believed that a relationship between the two of them would be possible, but just not anytime soon. He ended the message with his usual song verse, and something very daring. Before he typed in his name at the end of the message, after the verse, he wrote down "I love you". He meant that he loved her in a friendly way, but he wanted to test her reaction.

Indeed, her reaction was positive. She told Jay that she loved him too, and that the two of them would stay forever friends, forever VCFs.
