Sidney E. (Sid) Mitchell, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Samuel
Mitchell (Zilda Eugenia Gladney) of Chickasaw County, Mississippi,
died Friday afternoon, February 5th at St. Joseph Hospital after
emergency heart surgery. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his second wife;
Phylis J. Mitchell, three children; Karen Eugenia Mitchell LaBach,
Jenny Claire Mitchell Davis, Sidney Eugene Mitchell, Jr. , and one
granddaughter; Kathryn Lynn Davis. In addition to his immediate
family, Mr. Mitchell had three living siblings, Mr. Beckett Gladney
Mitchell of Clarksville, Tennessee, Mrs. Mary Maudine Mitchell Carney
of Morgantown, West Virginia and Mrs. Ruby Allene Mitchell Springer,
of Starkville, Mississippi.
Sid Mitchell was inducted into the United States Army on April 23,
1943, just after his eighteenth birthday. He was a member of Company
C, 333rd Infantry, which fought in Central Europe, and participated in
the campaigns of Ardennes and Rhineland. His decorations included the
Bronze Star of Valor, the Ameto Medal and the good Conduct Medal. He
was honorably discharged February 20, 1946 with the rank of Staff
Sargent.
Sidney Mitchell married Catherine Delores Stewart (1924-1976) of
Houston , Mississippi in September of 1947. He attended the University
of Mississippi, Virginia Polytechnical Institute and graduated from
University of Kentucky, College of Civil Engineering in 1951. Mr.
Mitchell began working full-time for Cecil C. Harp Engineers, and was
a member of the Army Reserves, 100th division, 400th Regiment. He
served a year of active duty, as a Captain of Headquarters Company at
Fort Chaffee Arkansas in 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Sidney Mitchell was best known in Lexington, Kentucky for his
Engineering work with water drainage and assistance in the development
of the Sanitary Sewer and Storm Sewer projects for the Lexington
Fayette Urban County Government, as well as his help with private
mini-sewer projects. He was involved in the development of Lansdowne
Subdivision, as an engineer and land surveyor, and a large portion of
the Fayette County expansion and development over the previous 47
years. He also surveyed many of the horse farms. He worked with the
late O.P. Wheat, William Finnie, Roger Ladenburger and the late Cecil
Harp for most of his adult life, until forming his own company,
Mitchell Engineers, in 1978.He was a member of Immanuel Baptist
Church.
The funeral will be held Monday at 11:30 am at Milward's on Broadway,
and the arrangements are incomplete.
