Seasons In The Sun

Chapter 17: Shane

Remember that I made a vow that I would never let you go.

They say that time passes quickly when you are watching a child grow, and it is the truth. Before I knew it, Missy was two years old, and the legacy of Bryan lived on in our hearts. We spoke of him often, keeping the memories alive and vivid. I looked at Gemma, taking yet another picture of Mark's little girl and wondered why I was waiting. The time had come, Gemma was the love of my life, and it was time I proved it to her.

I proposed to her on her birthday 2011, and crying with happiness she accepted. We set a date for August nineteenth, 2012. By now, the popularity of Westlife was dying out, and we would have much less trouble with photographers than Nicky and Mark. Gemma took her time preparing, despite telling me that nothing mattered but that I was the groom. I couldn't understand why I hadn't done it years ago. Gemma looked gorgeous on the day we married, dressed in a simple white silk gown, but Missy was so cute in her little flowered white and pink dress, her black hair wearing a crown of pink carnations. She was a daddy's girl if ever I saw one, she stood by him throughout the service, holding his hand, while he held Nicola's on the other side. We didn't write our own vows like Nicky and Mark had, we considered the traditional wedding vows sufficient. I held Gemma's hand as we swore to love, comfort, honor and keep each other, through everything life threw at us. I wondered what life could possibly throw at us that we hadn't already survived together. I know Bryan was there that day, I felt him looking on and smiling, and just knowing that made it easier that he couldn't be there physically.

It was only a few months later that Georgina announced she was pregnant. Nicky was the proudest father to be I'd ever seen, he just lit up. I hoped that soon Gemma would want to start a family, I couldn't wait to have a child of my own to watch grow up in wonder.
