Grendel-Devil's Legacy #11

Christine Spar by Matt Wagner (from my personal collection)

Introduction:

Instead of a FAQ I decided to document everything that is Grendel, originally based on the listing found in the Grendel Collection Kit, and reprinted in the Grendel Cycle Trade. Most of this stuff is in my personal Grendel collection, so I know it exists. If you see errors that need correction or have information that I don't, please e-mail me at wmnoe@yahoo.com.

BTW - I have no connection with Dark Horse, Comico, Matt Wagner or anyone else, I just love Grendel. All contents are copyright Matt Wagner or Dark Horse Comics. Don't sue me.

Comico Comics

Comico Primer #2 - January 1982 Art by MW Contains short Grendel Story in B&W. Not that hard to find, but it's expensive.

Grendel #1 March 1983 Art by MW. Black and White.
(Indica says that it's actually Skrog #1 whatever the heck that is.)
Grendel #2 1983 Art by MW
Grendel #3 February 1984 Art by MW.

For the true Grendel collector, these issues represent the hardest to find, and the ultimate collectibles. Personally, I only own #1 of the BW series, and I have read it. You know what, Devil by the Deed is better, by far. This series has recently been reprinted by Dark Horse in hardcover format (see below).

Mage The Hero Discovered #6-14 March 1985 to 1986: 4 Page Backup stories contain art and text (not a comic). These backups re-worked the stories originally published in the Black and White #1-3. Highly stylized and looking a bit art-deco, they were reprinted by Comico in a large Graphic Novel format, as "Devil by the Deed".

Synopsis: This is the story of Hunter Rose, though that’s not his real name. His birth name is given as Eddie, but he never went by that. Upon entering puberty the young genius hooked up with a fencing master named Jocasta Rose. We’ve never been privy to any more of their relationship other than a few sentences in the first couple of pages. Hunter would later become a best selling author (the most noteworthy title of his being “My Little Chickadee”) and playboy very much in the Bruce Wayne mode. He also would become Grendel, at first a mob assassin, then later mafia boss. Grendel’s underworld empire became vast, and virtually unstoppable. At some point in his early career Hunter became infatuated with one Stacy Palumbo, the neice of one of his associates. Stacy would also come under the watchful eye of Argent, a wolf-like creature who worked with the Police Department task force on Grendel. After arranging for Stacey’s uncle to be killed, Hunter became the legal guardian for Stacy.

Argent and Grendel staged an adversarial relationship with far-reaching ramifications. Stacey would discover her guardian’s secret identity, and actually arranged for Argent and Grendel to meet on that famous rooftop. An encounter that left Argent crippled and Grendel unmasked and dead. Stacy would spend the rest of her life in mental institutions. Most of this story takes place in the early 80’s and is a benchmark for all other Grendel stories to come.

This is a fantastic story, and is the one of the few truly graphic novels (it’s all words with pictures, there’s not a single word balloon) that have any deeper meanings to them. I highly recommend any newbie to Grendel start with this story.

Grendel Volume 2. See Table Below
All issues have a wrap-around cover.
In 1985 Comico asked MW for more Grendel, which he was reluctant to do, since he killed off the character. Check out this interview for more information:Interview

Synopsis: After several years of working on Mage and other various projects, Matt returned to Grendel in 1986 at the behest of Comico and editor Diana Schutz. The only problem was that Matt killed off Grendel (not once but twice, although it’s the same story). So Matt created a second Grendel, Christine Spar. Christine is the daughter of Stacy Palumbo, the result of a one night marriage that left her father dead and her mother even more catatonic. When her mother finally passes away Christine inherits the journals of Hunter Rose. She publishes a best-selling non-fiction book about the fiend and lives the good life as a reporter. That is until her only son, Anson, is kidnapped by a famous Kabuki actor named Tujiro XIV. Tujiro it turns out, is a vampire, and Christine does what any good mother would do, she becomes Grendel in order to seek justice for her son.

This new Grendel soon catches the attention of Argent and his cronies (including a detective named Wiggins) and the final showdown between Grendel and Argent ensues. This all happens in issues #1 through 12 of volume 2, and is reprinted in the graphic novel entitled “Devil’s Legacy”. After “Devil by the Deed” this is my favorite Grendel story. It has fantastic art by Arnold and Jacob Pander, and the original issues have some of the nicest covers I’ve ever seen. The Dark Horse comics Reprints (see below) also have some nice painted covers.

After the first twelve issues where could Matt go? Well into the future it seems. The second story arc (#13-15) involved Chrstine’s would-be boyfriend Brian Li Sung as Grendel. These aren’t my favorite Grendel stories, but they do have some nice covers and interior artwork by Bernie Miereault. Two self-contained Hunter Rose stories comprise #16-19, and each issue had a bonus four page Mage interlude. These issues have also been reprinted by Dark Horse, and the Mage Interludes were included with the Starblaze trade paperbacks of the first Mage series.

Issues 20-23 represented a huge leap in the narrative. Matt jumped ahead HUNDREDS of years in these issues, ultimately turning Grendel into an iconic figure, and also laying the groundwork for his next major story arc. These issues have NOT been reprinted (with the exception of #23), and Matt isn’t sure they’re going to be (so you might want to find those originals on Ebay sometime soon, if you don’t already have them.

Starting with issue 24 Matt began a narrative that would continue for several years. The next Grendel would be a lunatic named Eppy Thatcher, who, for whatever his actual reasons are, takes up the mantel in order to overthrow the government, now run by the corrupt Pope of the Holy Catholic Church. The pope turns out to be Tujiro XIV, and Eppy ends up succeeding with the help of Orion Assante, a government employee. By the end of the 10 issue story line, Orion has declared himself Grendel-Khan, and is in charge of almost the entire world.

And that’s when it got weird. Tujiro had started a new race of Vampires, who would continue thriving in the world. The Grendel-Khan storyline would run to the end of the series in #40, each issue being split between the Grendel-Khan story and the Vampire story, finally culminating in a last showdown that set the stage for Grendel: Warchild.

I did this synopsis from memory, so if I missed something, I’ll get to it later on.

Here’s a cool table listing each and every issue of the 40 issue series.

Coming Soon!

At the end of the 40 issue run published by Comico, Matt intended to do another 10 issues and be finally finished with Grendel...however, Comico was, at that point, mired in bankruptcy, and all "creator owned" characters were included in the litigation. It seemed that "creator owned" didn't mean a whole lot, and some of Comico's creditors tried to gain ownership of their characters. Anyway, it all worked out in court, and Matt was again given ownership of his character. He took Grendel to Dark Horse, and published those 10 remaining issues as Grendel War Child. The story continued from there.

Other Comico Comics

Silverback Miniseries.
Plotted by Matt Wagner with additional plot by William Messner-Loebs who also did the art and script. Additional art by John Peck.
#1 October 1989 "The Dreamer"
#2 November 1989 "Cold Memories"
#3 December 1989 "The Beast in the City"

An additional feature was a text page in each issue that collectively reprinted the first chapter of the Grendel novel that Matt wrote. This novel has never been printed elsewhere, and Matt has said that he has abandoned the project.

This series is WELL worth seeking out, as it's the only time we get to see Argent's origin story, and why he's such a tragic character. A couple of years ago a set of the 3 issues sold for $25 on Ebay, and separately issue #2 sold for $8.50 and #3 for $10.50. Seems a bit high to me, but they did have tiny, tiny print runs. As of 2003 complete runs have been selling for much less, and even some online stores have copies in stock.

Grendel Devil's Vagary

Written by Matt Wagner. Art by Dean Motter
October 1987.
This small (16 pages) black, white and red comic was included in the Comico Collection slipcase set. Devil's Vagary is a Hunter Rose story set at some point during Devil by the Deed. It is quite interesting indeed and well worth finding.

A1 #4
Atomeka Press (UK)
1990

Contains short story by James Robinson and D'Isreali focusing on Detective Wiggins who puts on Brian Li Sung's mask and becomes the "fourth" Grendel. Used to be extremely difficult to find at a reasonable price mainly because it's a comic that was published in the UK only, it can now be had for between $3 and $15 from several eBay stores. Chronologically it takes place sometime after #15 of the regular series.

Batman/Grendel
by Matt Wagner
1993 Co-Published by DC Comics
#1 Devil's Riddle
#2 Devil's Masque

Two issue series that was delayed for over two years due to Comico's bankruptcy. It was finally published by DC, with an EXTREMELY limited (I think there's 100 copies) edition done by Comico (but Matt said don't buy it because he doesn't get any money from it, plus it was like $50.) There was also a black and white preview edition published by DC Comics and distributed to retailers (I know because I own one). A sequel from DC/Dark Horse was also published. (Batman/Grendel II)

Comico Other Stuff
The Comico Collection

For their fifth anniversary Comico issued a special collector's set entitled the Comico Collection. It had a really nice Black Slip Case with Grendel Graphics on the front. It included Grendel Devil's Vagary, The Comico Black Book, 10 Back Issues of Comico Comics (the one I purchased had Grendel Volume 2 #3), and a poster of all of Comico's characters with art by Ken Steacy. Christine Spar is included on the poster. Occasionally you can find this piece separately from the Comico Collection, usually for a buck or two.

The Comico Black Book

Issued with the Comico Collection. Includes a page on Grendel (page 4) with original art by Matt Wagner, Bernie Miereault and the Pander Brothers. The back cover is a really nice painting by MW. An interesting feature is the Comico timeline which states that in June 1986 Grendel was optioned for a feature film. Don't be fooled, every copy of the Comico Collection has this in it, so don't buy this separately, buy the whole collection, and get the nice slipcase and Devil's Vagary also.

The original cover art featuring Hunter Rose

Grendel Tales

So after War Child, Matt didn't seem like he wanted to write Grendel anymore, and he opened the Grendelverse to EVERYONE. The results were pretty hit and miss actually. I like most of them, with the exception of Devil's Apprentice, which I thought was really bad, and it's too bad, since that was the last one for awhile.

Interesting to note, that starting with the first issue of the second series, Matt began to write the Devil Quest back up stories, which were all reprinted in a one shot. These stories are a prelude to Batman Grendel II.

Note all issues have a arc specific version of the Grendel Eyes on the back cover.

Also note that Dark Horse sent out preview copies in Black and White for at least Four Devils #1 and Devil's Apprentice #1. If there are other preview copies, please let me know.

Grendel: Black White and Red
November 1998 to February 1999
Four Issue series written by MW and art by various. Stories are about Hunter Rose and take place during Devil by the Deed. Each issue contains a brief bio of the different artists featured, and all covers are by MW. This series is a MUST buy for all Grendel collectors.

Grendel: Devil Child - June 1999, August 1999: $2.95 each.

Two Issue series written by Diana Schutz (long time Grendel Editor) and drawn by Tim Sale. VERY VERY Creepy and depressing, but WELL WORTH THE EFFORT to read. This is probably the best Non-MW written Grendel Story ever (and it's probably the only thing our Auntie Dydie will ever write.) Read it, live it, love it.

Grendel:Red, White and Black – September to December 2002.
A new 4 issue series in the same flavor as Black, White and Red . Again, each issue is self-contained short stories all written by Matt and drawn by either an up-and-coming comic artist, or a super-star.

Grendel: Behold the Devil #0 July 2007:$0.50. #1 - 8 2007 - 2008: $3.50.

A new mini-series written AND drawn by Matt who spins the tale of a lost chapter in the annals of Hunter Rose, literally! Christine Spar discovers that there are pages missing from her mother's account of the deeds of Hunter Rose and investigates. Similar format to Black/White/Red & Red/White/Black.

Dark Horse Reprints:

Listed in the order they were originally printed in Comico Volume 2.

Grendel:Devil's Legacy - March 2000 to February 2001:$2.95 each.

12 Issue Maxi Series reprinting the first 12 issues of the Comico Series with new front cover paintings by MW, and a NEW letters column edited by Diana Schutz. Also includes at least one original letter from the orginal letters column. The Pander's art has NEVER looked this good.

Grendel: The Devil Inside - March 2000 to February 2001:$2.95

3 Issue Mini Series reprinting the issues 13, 14 & 15 of the Comico Series with new front cover paintings by MW, and a NEW letters column edited by Diana Schutz. Also includes at least one original letter from the orginal letters column.

Grendel Classics #1 - Devil's Tracks - July 1995, #2 - Devil's Eyes - August 1995 $3.95

Single issue reprints of the Comico Series #16 & #17 (Issue #1) and #17 and # 18 (#2) without the Mage Backups. Includes a current letter column with letters from Grendel Tales.

Grendel: God and The Devil - January 2003 – December 2003:$0.99 (#0), $3.50 (#1-9), $4.95 (#10).

FINALLY some of the rest of the 40 issue Comico series is being reprinted by Dark Horse. #0 of this series reprinted #23 of the original series and #10 reprinted #33. Series includes new covers by Matt (thank God!) Also we get new letters columns, again with the sage words of Auntie Dydie!

Grendel: Devil's Reign - May 2004 - January 2005:$3.50 each.

Dark Horse continues to reprint the original 40 issue run by Comico, starting with #33 and ending at #40. When this series finished, all but FOUR issues of the original 40 have been reprinted.

I just found out recently, that the now-classic cover for this edition was not Matt's original intended cover. Elizabeth Bouras actually owns the original piece of art, and she generously allowed me to download the pic and print it here:

Nice piece isn't it? Elizabeth has a ton of nice images on her website. Click there and tell her Will sent you.

Grendel Cycle
October 1995: $5.95

PLarge perfect bound edition that includes a well written history of Grendel (an expanded version of the booklet in the Grendel Kit), a really excellent Timeline and the Grendel Primer (used in the Grendel Print.)

Grendel - Past Prime. June 2000. $14.95

A Novel by Greg Rucka with Illustrations by MW. Interesting story of how Susan Verheigan and Grendel Prime hooked up. Takes place after Grendel Tales:Homecoming, and a long time before Devil Quest, since Susan is dead by Devil Quest. Unfortunately, it talks about stuff that we already knew happened, but it's a really good read anyway, and it's short. I read it in about 2.5 hours.

There was also a Hardcover version of this book available only from the Science Fiction Book Club.

The Grendel Archives2007:104 Pages, $14.95

This book reprints ALL of the original Black and White material that Matt reworked as Devil by the Deed for only $14.95 in HARDCOVER! Buy yours today, I did. The book is pretty nice, and there are a few sequences in the story that were not developed in Devil by the Deed however, the story is actually not finished, and just ends on a cliff-hanger.
The Art of Matt Wagner's Grendel - September 2007: $39.95

WOW, a 200 page compendium of all things Grendel, produced by all the usual suspects. "Celebrating 25 years of HELL." Indeed, this book is a must-have. Dark Horse Comics
Single Issues with Grendel Stories

A Decade of Dark Horse #1

July 1996. Features "Devil's Week" a black, white and red story. Nice. This issue also has Sin City and Predator stories.
Dark Horse Maverick 2001 Annual

July 2001. $4.95. Has yet another re-telling of the final battle between Argent and Hunter, but at least it’s written and drawn by Matt.

San Diego Comic Con Comics #2

1995? There's a nice two page advertisement for Grendel:War Child in this issue.

Advance Comics History of Grendel Booklet.

This is the same booklet as in the Grendel Kit with a B&W version of the cover Four Devils One Hell #1 for the front cover and a B&W version of the cover of War Child #10 on the back. Slightly thinner stock as the Kit version. HARD to find, this came packaged with an issue of Capital Comics' Advance Comics magazine.

Amazing Heroes Preview Special
#11 Fall 1990
Batman/Grendel is featured on the cover, and there is an especially LONG interview with MW by Drew McPherson. This magazine reprints a lot of MW's art and selections from his sketchbook. Under the preview section there is a listing for Grendel Tales from Comico. An interesting tidbit is that the original artist of the first Grendel Tales series (Four Devils One Hell) was suppossed to be Phillip Bond. The preview also states that of the next two series the first would be by Eddie Campbell (Alec, Bacchus, Hermes vs. the Eyeball Kid) and the second would be by Rob Walton (which it was).

Nice article on Batman/Grendel II. Believe it or not, you can still find this at cover price in a lot of comic book stores. Fan always WAY overprinted their mags.
