Q: DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO PARTICIPATE IN CLUB WORKOUTS?
A: We encourage participation in all levels of fitness. If you are interested in competing or sparring we do encourage a minimum level of fitness. However, our boxing workouts are a great way to get in shape in a fun and very supportive environment. Workouts range from calisthenics, jump rope, heavy and speedbag work to running, plyometrics, and other forms of cardiovascular training. We guarantee if you stick with us for one semester, you will be in the best shape of your life.
Q: DO I HAVE TO SPAR OR FIGHT AS A CLUB MEMBER?
A: No! Absolutely not! Oonly those interested in sparring will do so.......and only after an assessment of the coach and senior members as to their fitness and commitment level. Some members will be interested in the health and fitness aspect of the sport and that is just fine with us. Afterall, it is not everyone's idea of fun to step into the ring and get pummeled unmercifully by a sweaty individual wearing leather gloves.
Q: I'M IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE ALREADY? WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY A MINIMUM LEVEL?
A: Fitness levels vary from person to person. Boxers requires the ability to concentrate on hitting a moving target, avoid being hit, and recovering quickly when you do get hit. A sustained effort of all these for three two minute rounds can be quite challenging. A good work ethic during the conditioning workouts will go far in making you a better boxer.
Q: WHAT IF I DO WANT TO COMPETE?
A: There are a variety of venues to compete if interested. As stated in the general information section, our goal(which has been accomplished) is to gain admittance into the NCBA. There approximately 30 member schools that compete regionally and nationally. Golden gloves also hosts a yearly tournament for novices. In addtion, the University of Michigan an established club that is very interested in helping us develop our club with inter-club matches.
Q: WHAT IF I AM NOT A WMU STUDENT?
A: The club is a student organization. However, students from Kalamazoo College and Kalamazoo Valley Community College will be allowed to participate in practices.
Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY FEMALE MEMBERS IN THE CLUB?
A: Yes! Last fall semester we had 7 women in the club. We encourage everyone to join.
Q: HOW DO I GET STARTED?
A: Contact us! send an email, talk to our members on campus, or visit us at one of the scheduled workouts. |
