Notes on the Black Spiral Dancers

"He who fights monsters should be careful lest he thereby becomes a monster. And if thou gaze long into the abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee" -- Frederich Nietzsche

Not just another ugly face

Contrary to popular belief, the Black Spiral Dancers are not a herd of giggling, drooling moon calves, though there are those among them. They are far worse; they represent, but for the grace of Gaia, the Garou's future. They are a dark reflection of the Warriors of Gaia, and are every bit the capable werewolves. One might suspect the true reason the Garou hate their fallen brothers and sisters is not because they are an affront to all things pure, because they are the twisted spoor of the Wyrm, but rather because they know within their hearts that the Spiral Dancers are right. Gaia is dead. The Garou should embrace the Gift given them by her - Rage - for all that it is worth. They should embrace the beast within, rather than denying their true natures, for that is the way of Man. And all know that Man is of the Weaver, and ultimately responsible for the loss of balance in the world. By strict adherence to the old ways, resisting change, the Gaians enable the Weaver to cast her webs long and far. By protecting Man, they protect her minions. Warriors, say the Dancers of the Shattered Path, hear the call! Let go the corpse you hold to your breasts and seek the beast within your hearts. Let loose your fury for it is great and powerful. Indulge the Wolf, they say, and recreate the world!

"Every encounter that a werewolf has with a member of the Tribe of the Fallen should leave the Garou with a distinct sense, not only of mortality, but a fairly solid recognition of just how far a werewolf can fall. The Black Spirals should not simply represent a target for the sake of combat, nor should they serve as a simplistic form for the enemy. The BSDs represent what the Garou should consider an omen of death, plain and simple. Not just death of the body, but the death of the mind and of the soul. They are the death of purity and of hope. They are the death of the dreams cherished by the Garou Nation and the horror and uncertainty of death staring back from the faces of the long lost brothers or sisters. No Garou should feel comfortable staring down a Black Spiral Dancer. To look into the eyes of one of the Fallen Tribe is to experience what waits should the war against the coming Apocalypse be lost. In many ways, the Black Spiral Dancers represent everything that the Gaian Garou fights to stave off every single day of her life."

But why? It is a battle already lost... Wisdom is shown in accepting what one cannot change.

"While the "shoot first, asks questions later" attitude of many Garou in some cases is effective, where the Black Spiral Dancers are concerned, this should generally be conveyed as a grievous mistake. While the BSDs may be nothing more than dark, hollow reflections of Garou in the eyes of the werewolves that encounter them, they are most certainly their brothers' keepers. Having the immediate advantage in numbers is bad enough, but also having the same strategic expertise as their Gaian enemies where pack tactics are concerned, the Black Spiral Dancers are not a physical threat to be taken lightly. Unlike most vampires or hunters, the BSDs can meet the Garou on any level they have to, including toe-to-toe. The Dancers can (and should) do pretty much anything that the Gaians can do. They have Gifts, just like the Garou. They call upon their totems, just like the Garou. They can reach into the Umbra, just like the Garou and they are every bit as strong, every bit as cunning and every bit as ferocious as the Gaian Garou themselves. One thing that should be kept in mind when running combat between Gaians and BSDs is the complete and total abandon that the Dancers can give into regarding their Rage. The Dancers are the children of the Wyrm and their Rage is a gift from the Beast of War. The further they journey towards the snarling, frenzied beast that Gaian Garou subconsciously fear and consciously seek to suppress, the more powerful and formidable they become in a combat scenario."

Some notes on Billy's abilities

Gifts

Persuasion Level One
Homid Gift - taught by an ancestor spirit
'This Gift allows a homid to become more persuasive when dealing with others, in such a way that his statements and arguments are imbued with added meaning or credibility.'1
Ability determined by Charisma + Subterfuge, if successful all Social challenges become easier for the remainder of the scene.

Cataracts Level One
Ragabash Gift - taught by a H'ruggling (sludge spirits)
The Garou's form becomes a black, oily blur, allowing him to pass unnoticed among others. Once the Garou has been seen, however, this Gift is negated until the viewer has again been distracted.
Ability determined by Manipulation + Stealth. Although he doesn't become truly invisible, Perception difficulties are raised.

Rathead Level One
Black Spiral Dancer Gift - taught by corrupt rat spirits
'The Dancer can squeeze his body through any opening no smaller than a quarter in diameter. This Gift looks very disturbing to unsuspecting onlookers.'2
Ability determined by Gnosis. If successful, he can squirm through any hole described above. Doing so typically takes a single turn, depending on the length of the opening. The Gift remains active until the Garou has passed entirely out of the space.

Resist Toxin Level One
Bone Gnawer Gift - taught by a trash spirit
'This Gift imbues a preternatural resistance to poisons and toxins of all kinds.'3
Ability determined by Stamina + Survival. Success nullifies the effect of most conventional poisons, and adds 3 dots to the Garou's Stamina for purposes of resisting spiritually enhanced poisons. The effects last for the scene.

Bane Protector Level One
Black Spiral Dancer Gift - learned while walking the the first circle of the Spiral Labyrinth
'The Black Spiral can summon Banes to aid him. Before these servitors can act, the BSD must convince them on his intent. His actions must be in the best interest of the Wyrm. The servitors can fight for him, but will not allow themselves to be bound or destroyed. The spirits will also try to arrange a bargain, agreeing to help the summoner if he performs a service (or sacrifice) for them afterward.'4
Ability determined by Manipulation + Leadership. Burns a point of Gnosis to activate.

Master of Fire Level One
Homid Gift - taught by balefire spirits
'This Gift allows a werewolf to heal fire damage as if it were bashing.'8 Effects last for once scene. Costs 1 Gnosis point.

Toxic Claws Level One
Black Spiral Dancer Gift - taugth by Wakshaani (toxin Banes)
'The Dancer can cause toxic waste to ooze from his claws... The Gift requires the expenditure of one Rage point. Effects last the remainder of the scene and inflict an additional die of damage, as well as residual Wyrm taint.'9

Blisssful Ignorance Level Two
Ragabash Gift - taught by Hoglings (Smog Banes)
'This Gift renders the Garou completely invisible to all senses as well as spirits and monitoring devices, so long as he remains still.'10 Roll Dexterity + Stealth, for each success subtract one success from a Perception + Alterness roll for those actively searching. If no one is doing so, one success renders complete concealment.

Wyrm Hide Level Two
Black Spiral Dancer Gift - taught by a Dratosi
'The Dancer may use this Gift to transform his skin into a lumpy, leather, odious, sickly hide that grands him additional protection from harm. Once it wears off, it slides oozing and bubbling to leave a congealed, smelly mess. Costs 1 Rage point to activate, and it is determined by Stamina + Survival. Each success grants additional soak.'11

Patagia Level Two
Black Spiral Dancer - taught by corrupt bat spirits
'The Dancer can extrude large flaps of skin under his arms, resembling a flying squirrel's membranes.'12 When not in use they all but disappear. Dexterity + Athletics determines control. Can gain speed of up to 25mph.

Rites

Rite of the Survivor Level One
'This is one of the most dangerous rites a Black Spiral can learn. It is only bestowed by a spirit, Incarna or Black Spiral elder who has victimized the poor bastard in a particularly brutal manner. If the victim survives, he cannot recall what he has experienced, but inherits the rite instead. The BSD never realizes the source of his continuing pain, but still feels an overwhelming need to exact his frustration on others. The survivor can then perform similar abuse on selectively chosen victims. The most common application of this ritual is during ceremonies of abduction and breeding.

While victimizing another living thing, the ritualist uses a point of Gnosis to erase his victim's memory of the event. He then channels the energies of the Delirium to construct an alternate memory. The torturous experience must continue for at least 10 minutes. The survivor cannot remember how she was victimized, but still has glimpses of the experience. Unfortunately, the victim can burn a point of Willpower to dredge up a vivid glimpse of the horrific event. Ragabash call this dark pact, "Our Little Secret".'5

Merits & Flaws

Cannibal - 3pt Flaw
Seems self explanatory, doesn't it? Until you think about it; Does he eat people, wolves or werewolves? Technically speaking, it's up to the Story Teller. Since Billy was created for a table top game, I had the benefit of getting someone else's OK (rather than relying upon my own questionable judgment) on making it human meat.

'Nature or nurture has forced you to eat human* meat - exclusively! Anyone twisted or desperate enough can eat a person, but the character with this Flaw cannot eat anything else and be nourished. The flesh can be dead, decaying or even alive, but it must be human.'6
*mortals, mages, homid garou, newly embraced or very high generation vampires and fae included as "human"

Bad Taste - 2pt Merit
'You're just plain nasty. Your flesh exudes oils tasting so bad that anyone whose mouth parts touch you (Garou, fomori, whatever) becomes nauseated. The would-be biter must make a successful Willpower roll each turn for the remainder of the scene or be unable to act while he is retching. Lupus and wolves may react poorly to you; they obviously won't lick you.'7
