EARLY HISTORY Sloan Township ( 88 township range 46 ) was seperated from Lakeport Township on June 8 , 1875. The town of Sloan was platted July 29, 1870 and incorporated in 1883. The town was named, as such, after Samuel Sloan RR investor who gjad some interest in the Sioux City and Pacific Railroad with John I. Blair. A depot was buildt along siad RR and the town of Sloan grew from here. Some of the early settlers, or at least those at an early date, of Sloan Township are: Joseph Gravell, Frank Morehouse, Joseph Coe, John Coe, Sindey Curtis, Robert Murray, Jesse Washburn, Ed Haakinson, George R. Beall, John Flitcroft, Andrew Fee, Andrew Chapin, Flavius O. Hunting and others. Mrs. James B. Johnson has the honor of having the first child born and Capt. Rufus Beall has this honor as the first death to take place in the township. George R. Beall is suspected to be the first white settler to come and remain here. The first township post office was that of Hamlin but it was dicontinued when Sloan was developed. The Hamlin post master wasJospeh Gravell and replacing him in the new Sloan location, James Johnson. The first teacher in the township goes to Miss L. Hosmer and the first church was erected in 1881. The first stores to open in the town of Sloan was opened by Fred Evans, called the "Evans House" and Ed Haakison. The first house was buildt by George Beall or George Barnard. And the first phyiscian was Dr. O.N. Ainsworth. The newspaper came into history by Charles Hunting, it was quite brief and noted in the Sloan town history book as "if you can call it a newspaper at all". The stage station for the township was wwas kept by Jospeh Gravell's house in the early days, and the mail was also left to him. |
