Story
High on Mount Illusia is the Tree of Mana and from it gushes the waterfall, the source of life. The Tree of Mana grow in tune with nature, if it is pure then the waters from it will purify and make good all those who drink, if it is evil then the people will grow evil. Thus the Tree is sealed away with the Shrine of Mana. Any who touches the Tree will also gain the power of Mana, ultimate and unlimited magic. The last one to touch it was the emperor Dole who abused the power and enslaved the world. Only the Knights of Gemma and the Mana Family, the keepers of the tree, were able to defeat Dole and seal away the shrine with the Pendant of Mana.
Now Empire Glaive ruled by Darklord seeks the power of Mana. The Hero crept to spy on Darklord but was caught an imprisoned by his servant wizard Julius. Now the hero is doomed like all other prisoners who are force to be gladiator against beasts for the pleasure of Darklord. After slaying a beast our hero finds that his only friend here Willy is now dying. Willy had investigated the plans of Darklord and grew into despair and now give our hero his knowledge. He said that Mana is in danger and to see Borgard at the Falls. He is a Gemma Knight and should know what to due. After that Willy fell and our hero is determine to escape and avenge his friend.

The World Screen (Screen 1)
When the game is started you will name the hero and the heroine of the story. This is a Zelda type rpg in which there is action and sight with the enemy and character. You can move around with the control pad, use a weapon with the A button, and use an item or magic with the B button. The game has three areas.
Fields
These are open areas where monsters roam.
Dungeons
These are "interior" places of towers, caves, mansions, and castles where monsters lurk and a boss one leads them at the end of the dungeon. Usually there is a great treasure in one of these.
Towns
These are where people live. You can talk to them, shop, or rest to restore yourself.
The world screen shows you where you are in the game, the monsters, fields, and some data about your character.
HP
Shows the amount of hit points you have left. You lose hit points by touching monster, getting hit with weapons, magic, etc. If your HP is zero the game is over.
MP
Shows your magic points. To use magic MP is consumed, if you have no MP you cannot use magic.
G
Shows how much gold you have. You use gold to buy things.
Attack Gauge
This gauge constantly increase over time. The higher it is the more powerful your blow with a weapon is. When it is full a MAX attack can be used. When you strike your weapon however the gauge reset to zero.

Menu Screen 2 (Start)
Pushing start at any time will summon the menu screen to the main screen. The bottom window displays what you can use with the A button, a weapon, and what you can use with the B button. The little window on the left is the Hero's condition, and the one on the right is the command window. You can use the control pad and buttons to select a command item.
Item
Use this to get to the Item screen.
Magic
Use this to get to the Magic screen.
Equip
Use this to get to the Equipment screen.
Ask
Use this command to have an NPC do his or her thing, if you don't have and NPC this does nothing.

Item Screen
Here is a listing of all items you have acquired so far. To equip an item--and then use it latter with the B button--just select an item twice. To sort the items just select two positions to be switched and they will be. To throw items away just select the item and then the garbage can on the bottom of the screen.

Magic Screen
Here you can select the type of spell you wish to chant by selecting one from the magic you know. When you have selected a spell you can use it the the B button.

Equipment Screen
Here is were all you weapons an armors are. You must be wearing a helmet, shield, body armor, and have a weapon at any time. On the top will displayed the equipment you have on and your attack and defensive power (AP and DP). Any equipment you are not using currently is on the bottom screen. To equip a weapon or armor just select it twice and you will be holding or wearing it and the other is unequipped. You can also sort the equipment by selecting two to swap, or throw it away by selecting an piece and the garbage can. Note that some equipment cannot be thrown away.

Non-Playing Character (NCP's)
During your quest some friendly people and animals will help you. The NPC will follow you around and help with the use of the ASK command or defend themselves from monsters too.
Girl
The heroine of the story. She doesn't attack but will heal you when ASKed.
Man
A mysterious guide who shoots flame and teaches about the Mattock.
Watts
A dwarf who is looking for silver. He throws axes and sell items.
Bogard
He once was a Gemma Knight and know how to use a sword. Teaches about the special MAX attacks.
Chocobo
A huge bird, who become Chocobot latter, and who will be the mount of our Hero. Get on it with ASK and get off with ASK.
Amanda
She knows how to throw daggers and heals petrification.
Lester
Changes music when asked and know how to throw spears.
Marcie
A robot who shoots beams and heals MP.

Menu Screen 3 (Select)
Pressing select will give you a small sub screen with three commands.
Save
Brings up the save menu.
Map
Brings up the map menu.
Status
Brings up the status menu.

Save Screen
Her you will have two slots to save the game. You can save the game at any time. When you save you save as is, your stats and location are exact. To restore a saved game select continue at the beginning of the game and then the slot you want.

Map Screen
If you are in the field or town you will be given a grid of the world. The flashing mark is the screen you are in and houses mark towns. If you are in a dungeon a dungeon map will appear. This will show you the rooms you have visited and how they are connected. Again the flashing mark is your location. Dungeon maps are not retained between turning on and off the game.

displays your current experience and the amount needed for a level up
HP
displays your current HP and you maximum HP
MP
displays your current MP and max MP

displays your attack power, bigger numbers mean you deal more damage
DP
defensive power, bigger tubers mean you take less damage from attacks
Stamn
stamina, this is how your defence is and how high your HP is
Power
this is how good you can attack with a weapon
Wisdm
wisdom, greater wisdom means more MP
Will
the higher your Will is the faster the Attack Gauge fills

Weapons and Battle
When you encounter monsters you can use weapons to attack and slay them. To do so just get in range of the monster and press A. You your weapon hits the monster you have done damage. When enough is done the monster is dead and you receive gold and experience points and maybe an item inside a chest. In this world there are six types of weapons and some of them have special uses. If you strike when the Attack Gauge is full you perform a MAX attack which is twice as powerful.
Sword
slashes forward or at an arc, MAX
press A and hold for a whirlwind attack, press a direction an A for charge attack
Axe
chops with the axes and can remove some trees and thorns, MAX
throw the axe
Sickle
swing the sickle around you, can mow down ferns, MAX
the chain stretches further
Flail
whip the flail forward, if there is a post you can swing across, MAX
the chain stretches further
Spear
pieces forward, MAX
throw the spear
Morning Star
swing the iron ball around you then strike forward, can break a lot of stuff, MAX
the chain stretches further

Magic Spells
In the game you will learn magic spell or acquire magical orbs to cast spells for you. Some are combative and other healing. Each also is aimed differently. Even though they don't have a MAX attack the higher the Attack Gauge is the more powerful your spell will be.
Cure 4MP
heals the hero's HP
Fire 1MP
shoots a ball of fire to the nearest enemy, can be cast with the Flame and Blaze Orb
Slep 2MP
this will put all of the enemies to sleep and they won't move, can be cast with the Pillow Orb
Heal 2HP
restores condition to good
Ice 2MP
shoots an icicle that is control with the directional pad, turns enemies into snowmen, can be cast with the Blizzrd or Frost Orb
Mute 3MP
mutes enemies so they can't cast magic, can be cast with the Silence Orb
Lit 4MP
shoots a lighting bolt strait ahead, can be cast with Litblt or Thunder Orb
Nuke 6MP
most powerful magic that sends a blast forward

Status Condition
Some enemies have special powers to enchant the hero and change his status. They all hinder him and wear off after a time but that may be too late.
Pois
the hero is poisoned and loses HP continual, cure with a Pure potion
Dark
you are blind and cannot see the enemies, some Eyedrops may help
Ston
when your legs are stone you can't move, a soft potion will help
Moog
the most dangerous, your defence drops to zero and you can't use A or B buttons

Leveling Up
As you battle you will gain experience to level up. In doing so your level increases you HP and MP are healed and you choose a skill. You can raise your power, stamina, wisdom, or will; and thus create your type of hero.

Armor
These items fashioned from metals protect your character. Some have special abilities but always equip with the best you can.
Armor
protection for the body this raises you defence the greatest
Helmet
this protects your head, face, and neck
Shield
unlike the other two this doesn't increase defence, this will protect you from enemy weapons and magic by facing them with your shield, a better shield means it is better to neutralize such attacks, also if the shield is strong and you level high, you can push the monsters around by walking into them

Items
These are used for various reasons and make you quest easier.
Candy
these are seat that heal some HP
Motions
these heal HPs, MPs and conditions, other items that can be bottled are also potions
Crystals
these magical stones increase your abilities for a limited time, the Cr Crystal will raise your Attack Gauge to full instantly
Orb
these orbs hold magic power that when broken cast spells
Key
simple key to open simple locks, they break after some use
Mattock
a pick uses to break stones, pots, rocks, and weak sections of wall
Bag
these are cash in items that can only be sold

Topography
Different pictures on the screen mean different things. Different terrains do different things.
Meadow
open field where travel is possible
Bush
thick bushes block traffic and cannot be cut down
Forest
tree grow here which cannot by pass but can be cut down with an axe, stumps left behind cannot be passed
Marsh
swampy areas where monsters are poisonous and can hind themselves in mud
Desert
stretches of sand where scorpions and other creatures live
Oasis
fountains of the desert where one holds a secret
Snowfield
always covered in snow, it is so cold Chocobo cannot come here
Field of Floatrocks
triangle shaped rocks float in the air here which can be removed with the Mattock or Morning Star
Desert Of Crystal
hard crystals grow from the ground, those that sound different when you swing your weapon on them can be removed with Nuke
Rockwall (Vines)
you can't climb these unless there are vines growing on them
Ocean
this vast body of water cannot be crossed until you meet Chocobot
River/Lakes
small bodies can only be crossed with a bridge, with Chocobot you can enter these from the ocean
Bridge
a small way to get to the other side of a river

Towns
Here there are no monsters and people and shops are found. Talk to people and gather clues of what to do. In towns there are three types of buildings.
Houses
people live here and don't mind company
Inn (Inn sign)
rest stops for the weary traveler, they heals all HP and MP
Weaponry (Sword and Shield)
here weapon and armor are sold
Item Shops (Pot)
here items are sold
At the shops any item or equipment can be sold at half price. Also some shops and inns appear outside of towns.

Dungeons
Dungeons are sources of monsters and hold great treasures. They have there own topography and unlike the field they have traps and puzzle rooms.
Ascending Staircase
walk on this to move up one floor
Descending Staircase
walk on this to move down a floor
Rock
they block paths and can be removed with a Mattock or Morning Star
Pot
similar to rocks they block paths and can be smashed with a Mattock or Morning Star
Ferns
these can be cut with the sickle
Thorns
these can be cut with an axe
Switch Floor
these special tiles are in puzzle rooms and unlock doors
Slipper Floors
these icy or slick tile push the hero, monsters and other things on a certain path
Door
entrances to other rooms some are always open, some need keys, and others need puzzles solved
Lava/Barrier/Spikes
enter these and receive damage, watch your HP

Weapon Techniques
During the game you will come across natural obstacles that the weapons can be used as tools to help.
Chopping
use the axe to chop down trees in the way
Cutting
use the sickle to mow down ferns
Transporting
if you see a post swing you Flail on it to go across
Smashing
use your Morning Star to break pots, rocks, and walls that make a clinking sound when stuck with other weapons

Puzzle Rooms
These rooms have a switch or two that must be tripped to reveal the path. There are a few techniques for them
Stand a Switch
move you hero over the switch floor
Treasure Chest
move a treasure chest over the switch floor, sometimes there is one already in the room, sometimes you have to kill a monster to turn it into a chest and move that to the switch
Snowman
move a snowman onto a switch to trip it, sometimes you have to make a snowman by casting Ice on a monster

Dead Ends
Sometimes you will come across a dead end and no puzzle room. This is when you must use your abilities to make a path.
Break Stuff
sometimes a path is only blocked by rocks or pots, use the Mattock or Morning Star to remove them
Tear Down Walls
some of the walls in a dungeon are weak and can be torn down with a Mattock or Morning Star, places in the walls that make a clinking noise when struck with a weapon can be torn down
Hidden Ways
sometimes a stairwell is covered by a rock or pot, if there is a suspicious rock or pot, such as a single one in a corner, tear it down and see if there is anything
