COMMENTS : The debut offering from Novocane is an extravagant chillout live/mix album, which captures the essence of their unique style. The first thing that appeals is the immense variety of music on offer on this album, from Badmarsh & Shri's chilled tabla'n'bass to Mandragora's caning techno dub to the cool jazz of Cortney Pine, as well as the classical interludes. Although this provides a fine mixed base, the album takes off onto a new and fascinating level through the integration of live sounds into the mix. The quality of both the didgwork and violin-playing are fantastic and their improvised parts add an extra depth to this album. Whether playing or plucking, Adam Polnay's violin blends seemlessly with the rest of the music, while the percussive sounds of Rich Moralee add further depth and dynamism to the sound. It is here that this album sets itself apart from typical DJ mixes and the result is a perfect chilled out accompaniment, which is nonetheless a fascinating listen (Click here for more information on the artist).
