Have an idea for a book? Ever wonder why publishers publish the books they do? Join us for a new event at this year's Word on the Rock and meet the members of the NLPMA as they demystify the world of book publishing. "Pitch the Publisher" will allow participants to present their book idea to local publishers and receive feedback. The sessions are free and open to all. Newfoundland & Labrador publishers will describe their publishing programs and discuss the kind of books they produce.
As some of you already know, the NLMPA is organizing a new event for this year's Word on the Rock festival. Pitch the Publisher will feature a variety of publishers who will field pitches from potential authors about their book ideas. These sessions will be open to the public, and the goal is to demystify the act of publishing, educate potential authors on what publishers look for in a book idea, and to raise public awareness of publishing in this region.

We are also looking for authors who are willing to pitch an idea at our sessions. Please respond if you yourself wish to participate, or if you know of any authors who might be interested in booking a time to pitch.

At the beginning of each hour session, the publisher representatives will introduce themselves and talk a bit about what kind of books they publish, their guidelines/preferences for submissions, etc. (We've allowed 5-10 minutes for this. It should be brief.) We will give5 minutes to each pitch (this time includes discussion of the pitch). We plan to have eight pitches per session, and 10 minutes at the end of the hour for closing remarks. We'd like to book some writers into each session before hand, but we will also take pitches from the audience. Each session will also have a moderator who will help ensure that discussion remains on-topic and that pitches run on time.
