Provinces
After the Great Sundering, when the mainland of Greyfeather was destoyed by the gods, the island nation of Greyfeather was the largest land mass left intact. The gods spared the island as a refuge for those they deemed worthy, as a place for those who survived to repopulate the planet. Samantha Kensak became Queen of Greyfeather, and she and her husband, Lord Vector, would lead the people to the glory and prosperity of the Fourth Age.
Queen Samantha divided the land into territories, or provinces, and bestowed royal titles upon the rulers of these provinces. The Great Sundering, the crown had lost virtually all of its wealth, most of it being on the mainland when it was destroyed. Without the funds to build an army or even begin a newly formed government, Queen Samantha was forced to sell portions of the kingdom to the highest bidder to gain the capital to put her government into action. Secondly, this would also bind all of the provinces to the crown and still allow each to follow their chosen leader.
The war against the Shadow Queen in 870 A.R. changed that. The Council of Twelve was disolved and Queen Samantha was made the solitary ruler of the land. Governors were put in place in each province, strictly to enforce her edits and laws. An exception was made for those racial monarchs who had reigned since before Kensak IV; the elven kings, the dwarven king and the gnomish king. However, they were required to swear fealty to the crown and recognize her as the supreme rule of Greyfeather.
