STD Code: 0497
Population: 463,962 Bekal,
in the far north of the state, has palm-fringed beaches and a rocky
headland topped by the huge Bekal Fort, built between 1645 and
1660. This fort, with views from the battlements north and
south, has an obscure early history but it has been under the
control of the Kolathiri rajas and the Vijaynagar empire. The
British occupied it for a period after Tipu Sultan's defeat.
There are slow-moving plans to establish resorts here. The
beach has fine sand and calm waters, but swimmers should beware of
shifting sand bars. |
