Delhi

Delhi is the Capital of India, it's third - largest city and North India's industrial hub.  Old Delhi was the capital of Muslim India between the 17th and 19th Centuries and a legacy of mosques, monuments and forts testify to this.  New Delhi was built as the imperial capital of India by the British.  It's a spacious, open city and contains embassies and government buildings.  The newer, wealthy suburbs are mostly to the South of New Delhi, and an ever growing belt of poorer suburbs and slums stretches in all directions.....

Punjab & Haryana

Punjab was probably the part of India that suffered the most destruction and damage at the time of Partition, yet today it is far and away the most affluent state in India.  No natural resource or advantage gave Punjabis this enviable position; it was sheer hard work.....

The state known in India as Jammu & Kashmir has two capitals.  Srinagar is J&K's summer capital, while the city of Jammu, farther south on plains, is the winter capital.  The regions of Jammu and Kashmir have been subject to political unrest since the unrest since the late 1980s and we strongly advice against traveling to Jammu & Kashmir....

Uttar Pradesh & Uttarancal

Uttar Pradesh used to stretch from the Ganges plain all the way up to the Tibetan border, but the vast territory was chopped down to size with the creation of the new state of Uttranchal in November, 2000.  Uttar Pradesh still includes Agra, Varansi and Lachnow....

West Bengal

The cradle of Indian renaissance and the national freedom movement, Bengal has long been considered by many as the cultural center of India.  After partition, the state was split into East and West Bengal.  Eventually East Bengal became Bangladesh and West Bengal, a state of India with Kolkata as its capital....

Orrisa

the tropical state of Orrisa lies along the eastern seaboard of India, on the Bay of Bengal.  Its main attractions are what the tourist authorities call the "Golden Triangle" ie. the temples of the capital Bhubaneshwar, the long sandy beach at Puri and the majestic Sun Temple at Kornark....

Sikkin

For many years, Sikkim was regarded as one of the last Himalayan "Shangri-las" because of its remoteness, spectacular mountain terrain, varied flora and fauna, and ancient Buddhist gompas (monasteries).  It was never easy to visit and, even now, you need a permit to enter Sikkim....
