In the center of
Thrissur the Hindu-only Vadakkunathan Kshetram temple is famed
for its artwork. To the west and east are the lesser
known. Thiruampady and Paramekkavu temples.
Several festivals are celebrated at the temples. The
annual April/May Pooram Festival, which includes colorful
processions of decorated elephants is one of the biggest.
There are
several interesting churches including the large Our Lady of
Lourdes Cathedral, Puttanpalli Church and the Chaldean
(Nestorian) Church. The Archeological Museum, further
along Museum Road is worth a visit. It has temple
models, stone reliefs, Gandharan pieces and reproductions of
some of the Mattancherry murals. It's open 10 am to 5
pm. The museums are closed on Monday.
