BIRTHDAY
POEMS

Happy
Birthday to a Special Friend
Happy birthday to a special
friend!
Although I haven't known you
many years,
Perhaps because you've dried
so many tears,
Pleasure reigns as I these greetings
send.
Your happiness should last till
all things end!
Because
you've been so sweet and understanding
In toughest times you've made
me laugh and smile
Rejoice in your own specialness
awhile:
This I'm not requesting but
demanding!
How else to make yourself the
celebration,
Doing what does not come naturally?
Always your concern has been
for me,
Yet now you must endure my adoration!
Happy Birthday to a Special
Friend
Happy birthday to a special
friend.
All my love to you this precious
day!
Part of me knows just what I
should say;
Part perhaps some deeper word
would send.
You're the strand on which I
silent write
Before my dreams are swept far
out to sea.
In you there's room to canter
and run free,
Restoring my lost sense of space
and light.
To me you are a place where
I can stay,
Hanging out to watch the rush
of time,
Drawing in the sand a lazy line
Along which I can go my own
sweet way.
You are my sun and shade, my
bread and wine.
Happy Birthday, Mother
Happy birthday, Mother,
Even though you might prefer
Life without these markers,
Each too public to defer.
Now that you are fifty,
Sing to us your own sweet song,
That we might celebrate your
life,
Rejoicing all night long.
Each of us has love to bring,
Each a special song to sing,
To lose your heart among.
Happy Birthday to My Dearest
Man
Happy birthday to my dearest
man,
A father after many years of
trying.
Pleasure? Yes, of course, there's
no denying;
Perhaps more, though, the angst
of those who plan.
Yet now we have a boy, whose
gurgles can
Bestow on us a love of life
undying,
Immerse us in the bliss of happy
sighing,
Remind us of the world when
we began.
There is no view of heaven before
dying;
However, this tutorial will
do.
Deep though my joy, the well
is deeper still,
Abysses far beyond my thought
and will,
Yet not beyond my boundless
love for you.
Happy Birthday to the One
I Love
Happy birthday to the one I
love!
All my joy goes out to you today!
Perhaps I learned, the months
you were away,
Part of me moves always as you
move.
You're the yearning distance
can't remove,
Bringing life to reveries cold
and gray;
In thoughts of you my dreams
and passions play,
Rejoicing in a hope that time
will prove.
Today I celebrate your day of
birth,
Happy in the hour that brought
you here,
Drawn by all the music of your
worth,
A time for gratitude that you
are near.
You are the one on Earth I hold
most dear.
Hold Within Your Arms a Sun
Hold within your arms a sun
And let it smile and wish you
well.
Play with it, and when you're
done,
Put it where you'll never tell.
Your sun will smile just for
you,
Being yours, and yours alone,
Inside your palace, out of view,
Resting in a place unknown.
The sun we wish for you is bright,
Happy doing what suns will:
Daring to hold off the night
As loves and dreams your future
fill,
Your cares caress and sorrows
still.
I Love You as My Closest,
Dearest Friend
I love you as my closest, dearest
friend.
Boys and girls can be just closest
friends.
There is no passion greater
than the one
That touches not the body but
the heart.
You mean much more to me than
someone who
I date and undate, want and
then don't want.
They're the waves, and you are
like a shore
Where I can sit and watch them
kiss the sand.
I'm
sorry I can't be with you today,
When you should rule by virtue
of your birth.
Please accept this tribute of
mere words,
Poor substitute for all I am
and have.
How Can I Make This Time
of Telling Special
How can I make this time of
telling special
When I tell you that I love
you every day?
How can I tell you that you
are my angel
When you know you are my angel
anyway?
I love you more on this, your
day of birth,
Than on the day we married,
long ago.
Like a tree each year in height
and girth,
My love has grown immense, though
still and slow.
But each time our eyes join
instead of meet,
It's as though the lights of
stars and sun
Join in me, a burst so bright
and sweet,
It couldn't be contained by
anyone.
And so as poetry it flows to
you
That I may words with all my
love imbue.
I Miss You on Your Birthday
I miss you on your birthday,
Not only for your smile,
But for the piece of me that's
gone,
Left within your care.
I'm in an empty hallway
And have been for awhile,
Gazing inwardly towards home,
Neither here nor there.
How
quickly we've turned distant!
The months pass by like years.
How could friends so inseparable
So soon seem so apart!
How
imprecise the instant
Held hostage by my tears!
Though Time may seem insatiable,
I have you in my heart.
Sing
for All the Years You Have Been
Granted
Sing for all the years you have
been granted,
Each blessing sing, each child,
girl and boy!
Verses sing for all the things
you've wanted:
Each victory, each pleasure,
and each joy!
No matter age or illness, sing
undaunted,
Though you may be by dreams
or memories haunted,
Yet sing, and life and love
this day enjoy!
Sweet
Sixteens Are Harbingers of Grace
Sweet Sixteens are harbingers
of grace,
Intimations of a childhood's
end,
Xxx's on the envelope of time.
This invitation I to you extend,
Easy in the rush of time and
place,
Expecting in the moment's silver
chime
No more than just a glimpse
of life to come.
To Ellen, Lady of Such Grace
To Ellen, lady of such grace
As well might grace a husband's
life;
Whose gentle Quattrocento face
Conveys the wisdom of the wife.
As well might grace a husband's
life,
She has a way with words, whose
wit
Conveys the wisdom of the wife
Obliquely, bit by subtle bit.
She
has a way with words, whose
wit
Works patiently, as dawn will
come
Obliquely, bit by subtle bit,
Till even fools can see the
sun.
Works
patiently, as dawn will come
To bring the dark sky's dreams
to light,
Till even fools can see the
sun
Restore the joys long lost to
night.
To
bring the dark sky's dreams
to light,
Whose gentle Quattrocento face
Restores the joys long lost
to night?
To Ellen: lady of such grace!
To My Mom
I really love my mom, and I
Never will forget her,
And all the things she does
for me,
Like making me feel better,
Like when she buys me lots of
stuff,
A raincoat or a sweater,
Or when she takes time from
her work
So we can play together.
Sometimes
when I'm feeling sad,
She makes me glad again,
With just a little kiss-and-hug
That takes away all pain.
So
happy birthday, Mom! I want
This day to be for you,
For everything you are to me
And all the things you do.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY !
What Unsuspecting Miracle
What unsuspecting miracle
Has passed through his first
year?
Has circled round the smiling
sun
To sit before us here?
What angel changeling changed
our lives
Since he arrived from heaven,
Bringing home the ballyhoo
That rounds the gates of Eden?
What
bright eternal soul have we
Since taken into time?
Have welcomed into weeks and
days
Still stunned by the sublime?
What
love has love brought to this
world?
What joy has pleasure wrought?
For this, our celebration, sings
Of far more than we sought.
You Feel the Fortune of Your
Years
You feel the fortune of your
years,
I hope. For all your children's
love
This day must bring you happy
tears
And thoughts that joyful music
prove.
I hope, for all your children's
love,
There is an island, be it small,
And thoughts that joyful music
prove
Beyond what years you may recall.
There
is an island, be it small,
Amid the passions of the sea,
Beyond what years you may recall,
Where you in silent grace can
be.
Amid
the passions of the sea,
This day must bring you happy
tears.
Where you in silent grace can
be,
You feel the fortune of your
years.

Your Birthday Was the
Day We First Were Us

Your birthday was the day
we first were us,
And so for me it is a day
twice blessed.
I celebrate my having you
twice over:
First, that you are you,
then that you're mine.
I never felt a love so free
and fine,
So much of me that I am
but a lover,
So rich and full to crowd
out all the rest,
The me I was before I turned
to us.
I
am so joyful to be part of us,
To be at home with you and not
a guest,
To celebrate this day and not
another,
To share with you a common boundary
line.
To
My 'Sis,' from 'Lil Sis'
To my 'Sis,' from 'Lil Sis,'
On her birthday far away:
Maybe life will separate us,
Yet we'll always be best friends.
So may love, until life ends,
In joy or sorrow not forsake
us,
Sunshine on the darkest day.
Though there's a frequency I
miss,
Each breath of peace that fortune
sends
Recalls a bond time can't betray.
On
Your Day Just Want to Say
On your day just want to say
That you can count on me
To be your friend until the
end:
Just wait and you will see!
I know that you would be as
true
To me for just as long.
No 'if' or 'but,' no matter
what,
Our friendship will be strong.
So,
my dear, I'm glad you're here
To share my joy and pain.
I care so much, so keep in touch-
I'll talk to you again!
