Weekend in the Woods

WOW, the Sipsey Wilderness in February.  Is it any wonder we choose this trip during this time every year?  After choosing for fun and fellowship Friday night with Starkville's Troop 45 instead of driving in severe thunderstorms, we departed in the early morning hours on Saturday. Upon arriving, we unloaded gear and cooked a great breakfast. Ever notice how everything tastes better in the outdoors?  We then geared up, checked each other's packs and headed in.  The trail lead us through a hardwood forest, a pine forest, and finally developed into the Sipsey trademark hemlock forest.  We chose to dive off the marked trail and head down into the streambed.  We soon stopped for a small break at a set of cascading waterfalls and determined our course of action.  We were trapped in a box canyon at the cascades and had to bushwack back to the main trail.  After locating the trail, we continued to hike down the trail to the river.  Our campsite was a beautiful location just off the Sipsey river.  Camping here was wonderful, with plenty of cold water and fresh air.  Hiking out was the tough part, in that we climbed several hundred feet over just 3/4 of a mile.  Everyone made it out safely, and had a great time.  Of our 7 guys that went, 5 of them had never been backpacking.  I'm especially proud of their achievements!  Great Job and Fantastic Trip!!
