When a lad of 12, his father (who with his family then lived at Three Rivers, Quebec) gave him a horse and saddle and $5 in cash, and started him off to seek his relatives and obtain his education in Peacham, Vermont, 150 miles distant thr ough an almost trackless forest. This journey, which in those days was deemed a great one, was safely accomplished, and soon after his arrival, a bargain was struck whereby the youth in exchange for his horse and saddle obtained two years board, clothing and schooling. Later he returned to Montreal. He was owner of a model farm situated near Rigaud, on the Ottawa River, and engaged extensively in the lumber trade; for over thirty years, he had large contracts with the Government for the supply of firewood.

Military: In the War of 1812, he ser ved as volunteer under the British flag, with the rank successively of Sergeant -Major and Lieutenant.
