Just after he undertook the sole control, the entire mill was destroyed by fire, 10 April 1895. With characteristic energy, Mr. Cushing undertook to rebuild it at once on a thoroughly modern plan. In 1896, it was finished and is now one of the most modern, largest and best equipped saw-mills in the world, employing 225 men. To utilize the waste from the saw-mill, he, in 1899, organized the Cushing Sulphite Fibre Co. with mills covering 1 1/3 acres of ground, and employing 250 men.
