Birth: 22 June 1831 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts Death: 1888 George was one of the pioneer lumber merchants of Saint John, having moved there from Winterport, Maine in 1853. He became a member of the firm of Andre Cushing & Company in 1857, and no change was made in its membership until his death in 1888, when his interests were assumed by his son, George S. Cushing. Lumber was shipped by this firm to the United States, West Indies, South America and Canary Islands. In character and integrity Mr. Cushing was irreproachable and in courage indomitable, and possessed the admiration and respect of all. He was never naturalized in Canada, but always retained his United States citizenship.
