Edisto Island, South Carolina
 |
A Black-chinned hummingbird showed up at my feeder in November 2003. By February he was coming regularly. Having a hummingbird in the winter is unusual so I sent pictures to a bird bander (someone who is licensed by the state to capture and band birds for the purpose of gaining more knowledge about migratory habits of birds and their territories). He immediately came, made a positive ID and banded it.
This adult male Black-chinned Hummingbird normally lives in Central Texas and British Columbia, a very rare bird in SC.
Once he molts and his new feathers come in he will head back to Texas and breed. Imagine a bird this small flying half way across the US. Amazing! |
