The dog made friends with the fox.

The dog worked in a house. The master trained the dog to protect ducks from being taken by animals like foxes, wolves or weasels. The fox was a duck-eater who stole a duck a day from the house. The dog put up with the fox’s craftiness, because they were friends.

The master soon discovered what was happening. He drove the dog away because he wasn’t doing his duty. Now the dog was gone the master charged the horse to protect the ducks. The fox could not steal ducks under the horse’s eyes so he ran away with the dog.

The fox was hungry. There were no ducks around. So when the dog was sleeping, the fox took a bite of one of the dog’s back legs. The dog woke up and ran away. He bled a lot but he was better soon, the wound was mended with clay. Now the fox found himself alone, as well as hungry.

From that time on, the dog has always had to lift his leg whenever he went to the toilet. Otherwise the clay will become wet and his wound will be re-opened.
