For humanity & against the Death Penalty
On June 18 Mexican Irineo Montoya became the 39th person to be
executed by the US state this year. This prompted huge
demonstrations in Mexico. The Death Penalty in the US is racist. In
Ireland we have the media and the politicians drumming up racism
against refugees on the one hand while on the other they hold the US
Criminal 'Justice' system up as a model.
Zero tolerance became a buzz word for politicians during the
election. But the USA now has a higher percentage of its population
in jail then any industrialised country (except Nazi Germany and
Stalin's Russia) ever had. 1,600,000 people are now in prison!.
According to Amnesty International
"Montoya's lawyer argued that Montoya didn't understand English
and couldn't have produced the confession, written in English,
attributed to him. His lawyer also argued that Montoya was denied the
right to see a representative of the Mexican consulate, a right
guaranteed by international treaties to which the United States is
party. No lawyer was present when he signed the confession admitting
involvement in the killing. Montoya was 18 at the time of the
murder...."
Thousands of people are on Death Row, awaiting execution in the
USA. The Zapatista Action project is asking people to join with us
and other groups in picketing the US Embassy in Ballsbridge on July
4th at 5.30 pm. We hope you will join us there.
