Origin= Thailand

Scientific Name= Labeo bicolor

Max. Size= 5" (12.7CM)

pH= 6.5-7.5

Temperature= 23-27C (75-82F)

Temperment= This fish is hostile with it's own species, you may see them together in the fish tank at the fish store, but they will get hostile as they get older. It may also be hostile to other fish in the tank as well when older

Minimum Tank Size and/or Tank Type= A 51G (200L), preferablly a Monospecies tank

Other Info= This fish can be rather aggresive, think it through well before adding one of these fish to your tank, will it go with the fish I currently have or am planning to get?

Breeding Info= TANK: at least a 51G (200L) with hiding places and plant thickets; streaming water should be provided with a forced circulation filter.

GENDER: The male's caudal fin is a more vivid red; the female is larger and fuller in the body before spawning, her caudal fin is less vividly coloured.

BREEDING RATIO: 1 male : 1 female

BREEDING WATER: 22-24C (72-76F); pH of 6.5-7; dCH max. 1

OTHER BREEDING INFO: Breedin this fish will only be accomplished in an aquarium if carp hypophysis is injected (please note that only 2 mg of hypophysis per 100G of live weight). The hypophysis must be applied when the fish's ripeness is at its peak. If the hypophysation succeds, spawning takes place within 24 hours without fail. At first the paired fish display to one another and swim to a strong stream of water. A few hours later they begin spawning. The female will deposit 1,000 eggs. After spawning the eggs float freely in the water; those that sink do not develop further (the eggs are non-adhesive), the incubation period is about 24 hours. Siphon off the eggs with a small rubber tube and transfer them to a seperate tank, where they should be kept in constant motion by strong aeration. The newly hatched fry are small and coloured blue-gray. After 24 hours they switch over to exogenous nutrition, you should feed the, Paramecium caudatum, later fine Cyyclops nauplii and then brine shrimp nauplii. From the time they are a month old provide the young fish with occasional vegetable food.
