Settled in Thornton. First house was by railroad tracks, and flying sparks started a fire that burned house down. He had store and tavern on the Northwest Turnpike. He had a grist mill, sawmill & sugar camp. It is said the town of Thornton was named for him. He was an original member of the Union Methodist Church.

This is an active, extremely well-kept cemetery adjacent to the Knottsville United Methodist Church in Taylor County near Grafton WV. It is located approximately 2 miles southeast of Grafton, WV at the intersection of Taylor County Roads 9 (Knottsville Road), 48, and 9-17. Route 9-17 is the old Northeastern Turnpike.

Samuel DEWEES of Parchment Valley, Jackson County, who was born ca. 1788 in Kent County, Delaware and grew up in Fayette County Pa. He bought land in Jackson County and moved there with his family around 1820. His wife, Edith died after 1850 and before 1860. Samuel died after 1860 and before 1870. He married a Nancy Davis after Edith's death. (John Dawson)
