Articles about the house:

CIVIL WAR-ERA HOUSE BECOMES A MUSEUM UNDERGROUND RAILROAD STATION
By RICH DAVIS,
The Evansville Courier; 25 October 1998
...the house -- a block or so from the hand-wound town clock atop St. Pius Church -- is where the Heinzle family hid runaway slaves. "The Emmick plantation was across the river," says Efinger, "but you couldn't drive those slaves off it with dynamite. The Emmicks took care of them."
But other slaves from that area and farther south crossed the Ohio there.
One slave who fled the area long before the Nester House existed was Josiah Henson of Daviess County, Ky. He founded a settlement in Canada and led others to freedom. His descendants say he was the real Uncle Tom who inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel.

Rich Davis also printed another article on the Emmick Plantation with notes on the Civil War and early Abraham Lincoln History as well as the reference to Nicholas Emmick's land grant being from President James Monroe.

EMMICK'S LANDING A STORIED HOUSE WAS CRUMBLING UNTIL RETHA EMMICK NEWELL DECIDED SHE'D RATHER HAVE A PLANTATION THAN A BENTLEY
By RICH DAVIS, The Evansville Courier, 24 September 1998
...
"You know, the Yankees fired on this place (Civil War). They wanted to steal the horses," she says. That explains the cone-shaped rifle bullets found in the walls while she was restoring the two- story, Federal-style house over the past decade. She also found 96 pieces of silverware buried under the front porch, no doubt to keep it out of Yankee hands.
The old house across the way used to be two stories with columns, but her brothers accidentally burned it. Her mother rebuilt it with one story to keep grandma from coming to spend the weekends with them.
..
The Emmicks -- Germans who originally settled in Virginia -- have owned and farmed several thousand acres along the Ohio River about 20 miles east of Owensboro, Ky., since Nicholas Emmick received them in 1817 in a land grant from President James Monroe.
The house, with its large center hall and double doors opening to a full view of the river, was completed in 1850 with bricks and nails made on the site, and with poplar logs floated downriver from Troy, Ind. But when Newell took it over in the 1980s it was falling apart. "I decided to take it anyway ... I'd been saving my money for a Bentley car, so this is my Bentley."
The restoration -- which found them removing eight layers of wallpaper, replastering after the hog hair and sand ceilings fell down and returning fireplaces and mantels that had been bricked over -- took 10 years.
It also included construction of a new outside kitchen, a weaving shed with an ancient loom, a small museum and a replica of a slave cabin that doubles as a gift shop.
...
Standing on an upper porch overlooking the river, she talks of the Thompson Ferry which once operated near the foot of Emmick Landing...of how an 18-year-old Abe Lincoln was hauled across their property en route to Squire Pate's place to defend himself against charges he ran an illegal ferry...and of freed slaves who, after the Civil War, came through headed North.
At the top of the black walnut staircase is what she calls the "family rogues gallery," walls covered with old photographs.
There's her grandfather, a river man who was 16 when he watched the famed race between the Natchez and the Robert E. Lee in 1870. And her uncle Gene who went to California when he was 18 to make his fortune in the fledgling movie industry, eventually owning a string of theaters. Another uncle, Loren, followed him and opened one of the first drive-in theaters.
...
In the downstairs dining room visitors notice two curiously tiny doors. The one next to the fireplace took servants into the basement and out to the kitchen; the other, with its tiny set of steps, led to the upstairs bedrooms so servants could discreetly remove chamber pots.
Newell spends each September here, giving tours: "I tried coming back one time in July, but the summers are just too hot here."
Her husband plans to visit in the near future, even though he's from Atlanta and enjoys telling her she's "glorifying the man (Lincoln) who burned Atlanta."
