Colonel William Wallace was a descendent of Sir Malcom Wallace, Knight of Elderslie, of the illustrious Wallaces of Scotland. As a soldier in the American Revolution, he served at two different times: first, with the "Flying Camp" while living in Maryland, and later in Pennsylvania with the "Rangers of the Frontier."

For seven years, he was an associate Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Washington, Pennsylvania, and in 1791 became a Colonel of the Militia. In 1794, he was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and was a member of the Council concerned with the Whiskey Rebellion.
