Sentinel

Sentinel Waggon Works, Shrewsbury, UK. The Sentinel Waggon was a Steam Waggon. The best steam road vehicle ever made for hauling cargo.

I am slightly biased (and awating the flames (literally) from all other steam lorry owners):) But, I think that overall, the Sentinel, Especally in the S type and the Doble specials, were the best steam waggon ever made. The only things which came close, would be the Foden Speed series. Excepting the Henschel Doble's, which I know nothing about. Anyway, to get my connection to Sentinel. My dad worked on one. 8122 to be precise. And a Super too... now in Holland.

More anew, here is a scan of a drawing of the proposed 600 HP GP Sentinel. Pre-war, 3 1000 HP versions were built for the Colombian railways. This is a patent drawing that Sentinel submitted to the British government. I appoligise for the poor scan quality, but it is from a photocopy from a smallish book.

Some of what is said in the text blocks are: four axle 600 BHP "Sentinel" General Service Locmotive. Built for all gauges from 2'6" to 5'6". (in the drawing, it seems to say that it is a 4'8" gauge one.
Anyone have the STN with the announcement in it?
