| The Knights of the Order
of the Forest, is based on a combination of many different resources entailing
knighthood. Of key interest are elements, which are based on upholding
the eight virtues as described in the Ultima Online©
world setting, and the romanticized monastic chivalry of 13th
century Europe. Within our guild setting, holding any membership in our
guild, is by definition the direct service of a knightly order, and gives
any member legitimate claim to earning a knighthood within our ranks. However,
the title of knight is to be considered more of an honorary title than
a political one, and so being a knight does not necessarily include being
a member of the Adeptus Council.
In a traditional sense, a
knight is a professional warrior in the service of the local lord. In our
case the local lord is the guildmaster, who offers us land, property, martial
training or other services in exchange for military services. But also
within the ideal of knighthood there are certain codes of conduct, as well
as a demonstrated ability in the martial skills. All of these factors will
be discussed in determining what is necessary to become a knight of our
particular order.
Required skills-
-
A Grandmaster mastery of at
least 2 of the following skills: Anatomy, Archery, Fenching, Healing, Lumberjacking,
Mace Fighting, Parrying, Swordsmanship, Tactics or Wrestling;
-
A combined character statistic
of at least 200 (Str & Dex & Int);
-
At least one method of healing
and curing poisons (Magery or Healing).
Experience requirements-
-
Must demonstrate a working knowledge
of the tactics detailed in the Ordo Tacticum;
-
Must have at least 80 real hours
of experience playing Ultima Online©;
-
Must pass at least one of the
following skill tests: The Yew lighthouse run, Serpent's Hold Run, Orc
Valley Rescue, Dragon/Wyrm test, or the Amoeba/Oasis survival challenge.
Code of Conduct-
-
All knights are required to
abide and uphold all of the 8 virtues, and to live as an example of the
virtues;
-
No knight is allowed to kill
"innocent" characters which includes NPC’s and unconsenting guildmates;
-
Stealing is forbidden;
-
Knights are not allowed to steal
kills or loot from other players, except in cases where assistance is required
by the other player, the threat in question poses imminent danger to himself
or the guild, or in cases where the other player is willfully trying to
bring grief to other players around him;
-
For the sake of guild honor,
knights do not make wild boasts about how good they or their guild is,
and do not engage in ego trips or grudge matches to prove a point. Furthermore,
knights will not willfully try to get their guild involved in a guild war,
unless it has been agreed upon with the Adeptus Council;
-
A knight must consider his brothers
a priority over his other friends, or strangers who may be in need;
-
Knights are to lead by example,
they do NOT force any member of any team to do something against their
will;
-
Knights do not forcefully place
their brethren at risk for the sake of personal gain;
-
Knights must always divide the
spoils of any hunt with the members of his hunting party;
-
Upon encountering a decayed
body of an innocent, a knight must loot all he can carry and wait within
2 screens of the corpse a minimum of 10 full minutes, provided he does
not place himself in imminent danger in doing so. After the 10 minutes
the knight may do what he sees fit with the loot.
Becoming Knighted-
The progress
of any potential knight in the guild is constantly under scrutiny from
both the Patron Saint and the other knights in the guild. Fulfilling the
above criteria is not the only requirements to being a knight. Once the
Patron Saint and a unanimous verdict from the knight council is reached,
then the candidate is eligible for knighthood. This is to cover the mental
and behavioral aspects that are required as a knight of our order, without
supplying a checklist of how someone should act as a knight. A true knight
begins his work from within himself, and by the time he is ready to become
a knight virtually no other knight can deny his worthiness. He is then
entitled to a formal ceremony in front of his guildmates and friends.
The benefits of knighthood-
-
Knights are allowed an equipment
provision from the guild outfitter totaling 200 ingots and 130 yards of
leather or cloth, to be used in making personal equipment for the knight
at his request. This may be done once per month;
-
A knight is certified to administer
any skills test he has previously passed to any member of the guild;
-
Knights are allowed to host
guild hunts, martial training sessions, or skills tests at any time within
the guild;
-
A knight may sponsor any other
guild member's petition for knighthood, and the knight holds that member's
training and progress as his responsibility;
-
Upon receiving recognition as
a knight, the knight is entitled to a formal ceremony from the Patron Saint.
These ceremonies often include the donation of a ceremonial armor and sword,
which is to be used in formal ceremonies;
-
Knights may assemble to form
a knight's council in this guild, which is to govern the military actions
of the guild, in cooperation with the Adeptus Council;
-
Knights are also capable of
attaining the title of paladin. Knighthood is a part of the path to being
a paladin, but it is not always the natural evolution or even the will
of a knight to become one.
